Hello all,

I created this thread as a place to display "odd" arrangements of motive power. Perhaps it's a lashup that's not typical. A locomotive doing a job it was not intended to do. Some unexpected helper service.

Here are a few examples to get the ball rolling:

A BR 023 pulling freight in front of a BR 050, Baden-Wurtemburg Germany in 1971:

BR 01 pulling a relatively short train up the Schife Ebene in Bavaria, Germany. Looks like she still needs some help, no problem, a 220 diesel was happy to help.

I know everyone was suprised the first picture wasn't Rio Grande. Don't worry. Here'se a GP hood unit and a F9B unit working as helpers West of Rollinsville, CO in 1968. Also of note, the Rio Grande Caboose and Santa Fe (All the way) boxcar at the end of the train.

It's odd that the loco has the rear pantograph up (assuming it is an approaching train). Would also be odd if she was pushing the train.
If she was hauling such a train, I'd expect the front pantograph to be up. Pushing such a train I'd expect to see the rear pantograph in use.

Tom

Well spotted, I did not even think of that.
I was intrigued by the the two cab unit coaches at each end of the three-coach consist.

This is doing my head in! LOL

In my days modelling British "blue" diesels, it was considered daring if a depot painted the roof of a diesel silver and stuck a great big Union Jack on the side......

My contribution for the day, continual beating of a dead horse....

D&RGW F7A-B-B with a GP9. Rio Grande would also often run A-B-GP9-B-A sets, nicknamed "Perlman Mallets" after Alfred Perlman; a Rio Grande Executive. This is a "hospital train", removing cars from the site of a wreck near the East Portal of the Moffat Tunnel (Tolland), seen in Rollinsville, CO, 1966. This is a "short" train, looks to be about 28 cars including the caboose.

Looks like the Re460 is being transported along a narrow gauge line for some mysterious reason, but why is there a driver in the cab?

Very mysterious.

A slightly belated answer to your question: If you look at the original picture caption written here by my friend Georg Trüb ( http://www.railpictures..../viewphoto.php?id=280256 ) you will note that the standard gauge Re 460 standing on the transporter trucks was pushed by the narrow gauge railcar in the background. Therefore, the driver in the loco's cab acted as a "lookout" and was probably also equipped with a walkie-talkie or a cellphone to alert the "real" driver in case of an emergency or obstacle.

Looks more like a case of "water, water everywhere, and not a drop for steam" (with apologies to The Ancient Mariner).

Guess it gives a new definition to a tender behind ... Laugh

But the extra two look rather like they should be behind a turbine loco Confused Confused Confused
Maybe it was a way of shipping from the shop to somewhere they were needed, or a shipment of fuel.

Very good :)

I believe this is UP Challenger 3985, which was retired from general UP service in 1957 and restored to operation in 1981. In 1990 it was converted to oil burning. I have seen a few shots of this loco with multiple tenders. My guess is that since there is no rail infrastructure to fuel oil burning steam engines, they took a lot of fuel and water on long excursions.

Segway, UP 3985 in 1994 sporting it's triplet tenders and an A-B-A of E9s:
