The M* dealer at Oeiras has thousands of wheels. He measured the Athearn ones (12 mm diameter) and tried Brawa, Roco and Maerklin sets until finally Mabar of Spain 11.5 mm diameter wheels matched. He exchanged the wheels and taught me how remove the shell. Thus, I could - as requested by Juha - try to fit the Athearn PB shell on a M* PA body: Does not fit, because it is too short - see pic (M* body in the middle). Couplers: I drilled a small hole into the coupler bar sticking out of the trucks, respectively. Then I inserted a thin black M* 74990 screw (actually meant to fix C track) and cut off the excessively long ends to avoid C track center stub contact - see pic 1.Like that coupling with standard M* short couplers and Frateschi couplers is possible. Both, Mabar wheel sets (see post above) and "customized hook couplers" allow the Athearn PB unit to run on R1. The Athearn metal under carriage has a rounded end on one side, probably to allow mounting of a PA shell. Funnily, the PB unit runs best with a trailing rounded end, the latter one facing the train to be pulled. When track is laid thoroughly, it negotiates R1 curves, S curves and all types of turnouts - not as smoothly as M* material, but still good enough. On a scale of one to ten, I would give it an eight or a nine. I had an Alco PA-PB consist pull a six-car Frateschi streamliner train. The first Frateschi coach needs some extra ballast on the first truck to avoid derailing (but that is also necessary with "regular" M* locos). The close-coupling effect is very nice - see pic 2. The latter shows the PB unit equipped with bulleye window panes. Edited by user 07 November 2014 11:12:33(UTC)

And the M* PA paint scheme does not match the Athearn PB paint scheme. I noted that the prototype underbelly paint differs from loco to loco. The M* PA matches a prototype photo of the real road number 4210 (which is a PA-2). So am pondering if I should pretend that this is a PB-1 which happens to have black trucks and a faded paint. I guess that I am going to spray the PB trucks in silver. That should already mitigate the situation. At least regarding height and length they form a perfect couple. NYC Alco PA/PB colors: Now I got myself into something. Photos of NYC PA locos are hard to come by. On photos, both black-and-white and color shots, it is very hard to be sure of the color of the trucks - faded black vs. dirty silver. For Alco PAs, #4201 appears to have had black trucks in 1950, and silver trucks in 1956. #4200 and #4202 both had silver trucks in 1953. #4211 had black trucks in 1964. All units I found had the classic passenger lightning stripe paint (thus none of the early or later variants). So it seems that the standard was black trucks until about 1952. From 1952 through 1958, trucks were silver. Sometime after, black became the norm again. Few photos on the Fallen Flags website (see 4200 series): http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/nyc/nyc-loco.html |

Big NYC Alco PA/PB service day today. Since the motor emitted sparks and fumes, I dismantled the motor, cleaned it, replaced the carbon sticks ("Kohlenbuerstenpaar"), lubricated relevant spots and re-assembled the motor. Now it is a smooth runner again. So I asked the younger generation what to do regarding the black PB unit trucks, and the answer was: the PB trucks got to be silver, too. And right the younger generation is. Look at the beautiful outcome on the pic. I am really happy with my spray painting job. Alsterstreek attached the following image(s): |

Cool topic! After re-reading this thread I am trying to think on what to do with a lack of Märklin corresponding UP PB unit, to complete my PA pair... What have you started now? (again!!) Cheers Jacques |

Happy New Year all Alco PA fans, specially Ak! I was lucky to visit the Oregon Rail Heritage Center in Portland and meet the one of two surviving PAs in U.S. . Born as ATSF 62-L and now beautifully getting restored as NKP 190. A touching moment for a Märklin PA fan! http://www.nkp190.com/index.htmlhttp://www.orhf.org/Regards, Juha Brakeman attached the following image(s): |

Hello,
What would be a suitable decoder to replace the one used by the 37610/49610 locos consist?
I want to install a DCC (or mfx) decoder instead of the old motorola decoder.
Thanks. |

It´s an Amazing car in reality but it feels very small when you´re inside. The conductor told me that you could travel in the dome part if you paid extra Money. You could get the sense of luxury even when the car didn´t move. In a few compartments you could move the walls and have a bigger compartment. The train also included a transit car between the streamliner end car and the newer cars. |
