Hi all,
I'm in doubt whether to go for the Märklin, Roco or Fleischmann versions of the Rollende Landstrasse (Rola) waggons.
I'd preffer FS or ÖBB versions, which are/were sold by Roco and Fleischmann. As far as I know Marklin concentrates on SBB and DB versions.
My fear is that when going for the Roco or Fleischman versions, the wheelsets will give trouble, being prepared for DC track. I contacted Roco but their answer was very vague.
Does anyone has experience with this paticular type? Is there any difference between the Märklin, Roco or Fleischmann versions And are there AC axles to be bought for the Roco and Fleischmann versions?
Help is appreciated!
Regards,
Rinus

Hi Rinus, I am so glad I bought the Maerklin 28531 set back in 2000. The BR 184 runs great with the 5 cars 3x DB 1x SBB and 1x OBB and their trucks. My layout is C and M track and I have never had a problem with derailments with this train. Sometimes I have my 37240 FS E424 pull it as the train originates in Brennero, Italy. Good luck with your choice, Peter

I have a few OBB ones from Maerklin. The number was 479X (think it was 4797). It came in a set of two cars. I am mainly using the SBB Hupac ones. I was trying to see if these cars can be combined in consists. It seems to me that you would find only Hupac cars in a Hupac train and similarly DB ones in German operated trains and so on. Can these cars be found in mixed consists? Maybe on the Kufstein/Brenner route between Munich and Bolzano?
If you are just getting into it now, the new RAlpin set from Maerklin will be out later this year. RAlpin in the new joint venture between Hupac and BLS Cargo that will operate between Germany and Italy via the Loetschberg base tunnel and Simplon. The RAlpin driver coach is available from Liliput and will likely also be available from LSM (old version) and ACME (new version ex Eurofima Bcm?)

Hi guys!
Thanks for your replies! and thanks for the email Jeremy!
the consist I had in mind is:
[Marklin 37308 - Rh1012-002] - [Marklin 37309 - Rh1012-003] - [LS Models 47071 - WLABmz] - 8-10 X [Roco/Marklin Rola - Saadkms]
Like you say, Mike, I can't go with the Hupac ones, since I want to express the Brennerline trains. Your sugestion about a DB train though is intresting!
Then I could go for the 47415 set and buy two more.
Can you tell me more about the details of the Marklin items?
Regards,
Rinus

Mike C Hello Mike, new?? RAlpin is existing since 2001 and is the joint venture between Hupac, BLS Cargo and SBB Cargo. On a little part FS were involved too, but in a very marginal way. They are operating mainly between Freiburg and Novara, but have the line Basel - Lugano through the Gotthard route too. The new coaches are the old Eurofima Bcm61. They got 20 of them. rgds Stephan

Hi, Interesting topic! Rola is a staple of the traffic on the Gotthard line (my layout's theme) , albeit at a reduced pace these days, as I think most of the traffic is going the Lötschberg route these days. On my layout I run a prototypical 16 cars + WL , all of SSB/ grey HUPAC cars. I use an MU of two or three Märklin CARGO RE 482 or BLS RE 485 or BLS 185.5. And here is a plaidoyer for these *really inexpensive* models from Märklin that are truly ideal for this type of use. All it takes is programming the same values in the CV. I use 50 for max speed and 3 for accel/decel. The loks are under ECOS2 control, using the multiple unit feature; It works so well that I don't hesitate to put the third lok at the back of the train, as a helper (I know it is not a common occurence on a RoLa train, but since it is one of the "delicate" long trains to operate on a layout with spirals, I figured: "if it works with this one, the rest will be easy" No strain on the couplers, all works smoothly; And yes, my 32 cars container trains runs the same way, with a pusher lok at the end! I can sit for hours, just looking at these making their rounds!! Super spectacular trains...whether in models or reality! Cheers Edited by user 01 June 2012 22:30:47(UTC)

hi Jacques,
I have never seen a Rola prototype myself, therefore my observation was based on the photographs and videos. And I came to those two conclusions because I have never seen any photographs showing a Rola consist using WL wagon's original livery. But I believe what you're saying. during the beginning, probably they were using original's livery while waiting for the repainting schedule. But the last Rola car always carry truck. I remember somebody else had explained the reason behind this in other train forum.

Hi Tiono I know you are right about "the last car"...I was just too lazy to move the truck: the last car was added later to the train! I have somewhere pictures of early Rolas with Ae 6/6s and a red WL, as soon as I dig them out, I'll bring these here. Cheers |

Hi Jacques Never forget, it does not have to be real, it YOUR OWN imaginary world!! It can be what ever you want it to be! Your video reaffirmed my quest to have my own Rollende Landstrasse. I did consider starting with the 2012 Marklin offering of the RAlphin AG Olten Switzerland (47416). I did ask for opinions on this forum regarding "quality" of the truck / trailer models and got varied responses on this forum. What is your opinion, are they really that "crappie"? Regards |

Fitting in with my "little bit of everything" empire (BUT I am sure well short of "everything") I have 3 Rolling Road sets. The Marklin Mercedes Actros set M # 26520, the Marklin Fulda set M # 26523 and the Marklin Santa Claus set M # 26528. The Santa Claus set might be the most realistic as it has a coach. (With Santas in it). I have the Santa set here so took the photo below of the coach. Thanks to the magic of this forum, I know now why there are 4 Santas in the coach - 4 trucks = 4 Santa Drivers and the coach must be for the truck drivers. I know I know - I am a bit duhhhhhhh but thanks to Rinus, Jacques and many others I will get there in the end. Edit.. @ Marius, the model trucks are what they are, however the transfers/decals are very well done.j. Jeremy Palmer attached the following image(s): |

Very nice Christmas coach! And since the truck drivers are in the coach and not on the roads there will be less traffic driving thru the Alps and therefore more happy faces. Peter

Don't know what's "crappy" about these?? The Marklin ones are really very good, solid, all metal. I love them. Cheers |

I was asking about the "load" on top the railcars (the road trucks), not the rail cars them selves. Are the "load vehicles" of acceptable detail & quality? These are obviously supplied to Marklin by an outside supplier for example Busch or Herpa, etc. Do you know who the Marklin are using as a supplier? Regards |

Hi Marius! Oh! that's an easy one! The only one I got together with the truck is the one with the "Möbel Pfister" truck, which was made by Viking. All other RoLa cars were bought "unloaded" in sets of two or in singles. The trucks were purchased separately through the years (mainly Herpa) with some even undergoing superdetailing. Nothing really fancy though: license plates, rear view mirrors, as available from Herpa. And I still have room for six more... Cheers |

LSM has just announced some new models of the SNCF Modalohr type Rola trains www.lsmodels.comRegarding the 47416, the set comes with trucks that have more the quality of Hot Wheels than of the better Herpa/AWM/etc models. The only other issue that I have with the RAlpin set is that the trucks are Swiss and a Germany to Italy ROLA would normally have more German and Italian trucks Regards Mike C

Hi guys Placed an order for my first items, Marklin number 4740 & 4741. I assume the “rollende strasse” cars have their own road numbers, like the other rolling stock. So ordering more than one unit of each part number e.g. 2 x no. 4741 makes no sense, correct? Regards |

Hi Guys
Are the couplings between the intermediate cars as used by Marklin & Roco compatible with each other?
Thanks Marius |

Hi Marius,
The Marklin short coupler is compatible with the Roco universal and standard coupler. Only the Roco short couplers are not compatible.

I don't think that the intermediate couplers on Rola cars from Roco, Fleischmann, Maerklin (Trix), LSM and others are compatible with each other. You will have to decide on one manufacturer for the whole consist (other than the Couchette coach).
It may also be important to remember that these "Rola" cars have very small wheels are are very low to the ground and this may cause problems, especially on layouts with older M Track due to contact with the middle rail and on switch tracks.

Mike C Thank you for your response Mike. I have also asked Andreas at Lokshop to check whether the Roco and Marklin intermediate couplings are compatible. For now i have only ordered Marklin "Rola" cars and have decided to stick to the DB cars. If i get a positive answer from Andreas i will order two Roco intermediate cars from Lokshop as well. If not it will take a while longer to collect a decent size consist. This is not a "one day" hobby after all. Regards Marius |
