Recovered coaches of the TEE Ram dieseltrain parked at Amsterdam, awaiting restoration.
Unfortunately, the powered front unit is no longer there, possibly a new unit could be newly build, using the 3-axle bogies from a NS 1200 loco.
This train came back from Canada and was repainted in the red/cream TEE colors.

And TEE Ram in real life, when she was still young:

Great vids Paul !

All the "creature comforts" shown in the 2nd film on the Co-Co train are still operable today, except for; the auto venetian blinds, the smart personnel uniforms, the grand chef cuisine and the hard drinks at the bar ... LOL

But still, this makes one realize that vanguard ideas of the past always end up the realities of the present; true for rail, air, space ... and home BigGrin

The Second video was pretty impressive, and I actually got into the funky techno beat added on anachronistically.

The First video enjoyed too, although shorter, and baffled as to which train came back from Canada.
Do you have alternative photos of that particular train from the outside?

Yes,found this clip as well but noted there is copyright on it so i did not wish to bet my luck so to speak.
It is the only recorded accident with the TEE Ram dieseltrain as far as i know.
The train derailed because by mistake the locdriver was driving way too fast on that particular stretch of track.
It is reported that the TEE drove some 130 km/h !
Unfortunately,it ran into a local railbus which contributed to the high loss of lives,a total of 26 people died.
Very sad.

Mark,
It is not easy to find relevant information on internet but i will try later tonight, after dinner.
In Holland, there is a club which is sponsoring the restoration of that particular trainset, they have a website too.
What i do know is that one of the Ontario sets in Ontario colors was shipped on a Scancarriers RO-RO vessel to Hamburg some years back and that Maerklin was one of the sponsors.
I once was in Goppingen, hometown of Maerklin, and they were having the rough and neglected train on display at the station,i could even walk inside.
I even suspect that Maerklin were having in mind to restore it but apparently the plan was put in the fridge.
What i do recall is that the journey from Hamburg to its final resting place was rather cumbersome because the Canadian style couplers were causing the train to pull its brakes all the time.

The funky techno beat is by a german group called Kraftwerk, the actual piece of music is called 'Trans Europe Express',i am not joking!
Kraftwerk also made the famous musictrack called 'Autobahn' (=highway).

And,thanks to Wikipedia, found some pictures of the ONR units shipped to Hamburg in 1997 on oceanvessel 'Tampa'.
They were kept for months at Hamburg because the USA wheelrim type was not suitable for European tracks!
On 25/26th June 2006 they were pulled to Zwolle,The Netherlands.

Note the Maerklin logo on the sides!

Aside from the accident in Aitrang, one of the RAm trainsets was also involved in a minor accident at Munich Bahnhof. For some reason, the power unit appeared to have contacted the buffers at the end of the track. I wonder how pleased the Swiss were by the treatment of their flagship trainsets by German (DB) pilots.
In Canada, one of the "Northlander" trainsets, already equipped with FP-7 diesel and a second locomotive, was involved in a collision with a freight train, causing extensive damage to the locomotives. AFAIR the coaches survived that incident intact.

Whoa! ... so you mean the Northlanders were the origin of the the TEE???
Or was it the other way around, and is that the only one?
The colour melange of the Northlander getting painted red is something else!

When you said it was an Ontario train I was thinking of the GO train, which my father used to take everyday to work for years.
And anytime we went to Toronto from Burlington, we used to take it too.

Here is two clips that arent bad.
Each has a different kind of Locomotive on it.

and newer GO locomotive:

(wrt to the "cameo", by the way, actually seems to be a borrowed Amtrack train working for Via.)

The original TEE Ram dieseltrains were sold to Canada in 1977,with a bit of luck you can find pictures on internet whereby the units have been freshly painted in the yellow Northlander colors before being shipped to Canada.
Some 20 years later one of the trains (without the motor coach) was shipped back to Europe, intention being to restore and repaint into TEE colors.
Because of the harsh winter conditions in Canada, the TEE motor units had a lot of breakdowns,as such they were replaced by F7 units.
The motor units were scrapped in Canada, and that is unfortunate because there are none left in Europe either.

Tee Ram dieseltrains in Europe came into service in 1964,i believe there were 5 trains in total,3 trains under the Swiss flag and 2 trains under the Dutch flag.

Cheers,
Paul.

The RAm 501-502 (SBB) and DE 1001-1003 (NS) went into service in 1957 and remained in TEE service until 1974. One SBB trainset was destroyed in the accident in Aitrang, Germany in 1971. In 1977, the remaining four trainsets went into service between Toronto and Timmins/Cochrane as the Ontario Northland Railroad's Northlander.

Due to problems with maintenance and cold weather operations in Northern Ontario, the original power units were replaced by FP-7s. The original power units were later scrapped. The trainsets continued to operate with the GM Diesels until they were taken out of service. A Swiss association, TEE Classics with some Dutch help, bought the remaining coaches and had them shipped back to Europe. After a few years, they could no longer afford the maintenance and storage of the coaches, so they were moved to a location in Germany, where they nearly perished in a fire. They were finally moved to their current location in the Amsterdam area and a Dutch association has continued the restoration project. To date, they have not yet come up with a solution for the missing power unit. The most likely solution would involve transplanting the cab from one of the pilot coaches onto the body of a diesel locomotive that could be connected to the rest of the train.

I would think that a suitable painted multi system lok (maybe a Re 484/Traxx MS140 in TEE colours) could be placed in the middle of the trainset and operated from pilot cabs at the front and rear of the train, in a similar manner to the MOB Panoramic Express.

Former TEE Ram freshly painted in Northlander colors in 1977,ready to be shipped out to Canada.
Twenty years later she came back, now at Amsterdam, partly in original TEE colors, awaiting further restoration.

Hello Walter,

Thank you for posting these lovely images.

I have become very passionate about this train over the years. To my regret I did not realise the significance of the unit when produced by Marklin over the last 20 or more years.

2 years ago I bought on eBay a 3071 and have since been slowly accumulating the materials (and advice from our forum members re conversion) to convert it to a better-powered, digital version with interior details and lighting (watch this space)

Regards,

PJ

I used to have the 3471 in my collection, and sold it.
The 3471 has interior as opposed to the 3071.
It is a nice train to have but i found the couplings between the coaches rather unhandy.

Note the motor coach has a full metal hood, the other coaches have a plastic hood.

Some great old pictures of the Northlander and of parts of Canada. The third picture up in the July 18th post with the large low white building and the parking lot is the Royal Bank of Canada data center. The building is still there but core parts of the data center have moved out. The parking lot and most of the rest of that area are now high rise condos.

Meanwhile back in Ontario the Northlander (Toronto to Cochrane), using North American rolling stock, continued till 2012 and was then replaced with a bus service. Passenger service in Northern Ontario continues with the Polar Bear Express (Cochrane to Moosonee) with essentially the same equipment the Northlander used.

Translated from Dutch to English:

TEE Foundation

Dear friends and all those who have a warm heart for the Trans Europ Express Netherlands Foundation.

It will not really surprise you that with the TEE Foundation, partly due to all the Corona perils as well as the health of our chairman, our plans for the restoration of the Trans Europ Express train have run into problems both organizationally and financially.

Our beautiful plans were literally in danger of falling apart. But as is so often the case, it is better to turn the tide, if you can, than to go on without perspective for too long. In addition, we have to leave the current location in Lelystad at Jol 13-02 - which we share with the Transport Museum Lelystad Foundation (TML) - this year because our really benevolent landlord could no longer keep it up for so little income.

In short, we were faced with a dilemma a few months ago and we already came into contact with the Netherlands Transport Museum Foundation (NTM) in Nieuw Vennep, chaired by Arno van der Holst. We were able to make a good and responsible agreement with him to transfer a few more ideals to be realized - some of which have already been realized by us - which have been laid down in the statutes of the TEE Foundation to the NTM Foundation.

This means that definitive steps have now been taken to transfer the ownership of the entire TEE train to the NTM Foundation. This foundation will transport the TEE train, which is currently still in Amsterdam, to Nieuw Vennep where the NTM Foundation is located.

A start will be made there in the foreseeable future on the restoration of the TEE train, so that it will eventually be visible to the public.

Unfortunately, the foregoing also means that we will have to close the Trans Europ Express Netherlands Foundation in the short term because the goal for which it was established can no longer be pursued.

It remains to thank everyone who supported us all these years and had faith in us that we would achieve the intended goals. Unfortunately, we did not fully succeed, but we can still look back on a good time, which we were able to experience together and with the necessary volunteers.

Although the TEE Foundation will be disbanded, the Lelystad Transport Museum Foundation (TML) - which also has to leave Jol 13-02 - will continue to exist and we will keep everyone informed of any developments via our TML website or otherwise.

Sincerely
The board of
Trans Europ Express Netherlands Foundation

I find it ironic Märklin 2020 Insider model features RAm 501 that crashed in Germany. I am almost certain Marlin will release a Northlander version in the near future to recoup the tooling expense, and then a further RAm with a different road number.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see it issued as a Nurnberg Messe model in a couple of years.

What is Nurnberg Messe model?

I think there may be a NS version with different road number NS 1001, 1002 or 1003.

The Ram 501 was involved in the collision in 1971. Prior to that, it ran from 1957 to 1971 as the TEE "Edelweiss". This model represents one of the two SBB trainsets, so it was either going to be 501 or 502. The model is Era III, representing the train around 1959, so 12 years before the accident.

At some point, Märklin might release a model of one of the Dutch DE 1001-1003. It would require some tooling modifications to make a model of the Northlander, so I would presume that it may be the last on the list. The Dutch version would be a simple repaint of the original model.

I am very pleased with the model. I am a little concerned that the couplings may not be as durable as intended. I was also a little consternated that the coupling assist tool did not fit between the rails and was a little more difficult than expected to remove once the coaches were coupled.

I think that I am happy with what I have and probably would not buy a second of these.

The 3471 has interior as opposed to the 3071.
It is a nice train to have but i found the couplings between the coaches rather unhandy.

Note the motor coach has a full metal hood, the other coaches have a plastic hood.

My brother has the 3071. I have the 3471 and the 39706. Only the newest model is metal. The 3471, 3071 and 3070 all had plastic shells.

More items on ebay around holiday seasons in general. I was able to find some hard to find items in the past.

But you could be right.
