Hi,
(Edited 17 May 2010 with new photos from port side with addition of flags)

As in model railroads, the first thing you do after unpacking, is to test the running qualities.

In order to do this test, I used our swimming pool. I did not fit the lifeboats, because it was only a short run.

The 16064 ship "Jolanda" produced as a new item in 2009, is quite heavy, built of steel, and settles low in the water. The lowered stairs just touch the water. The wind up mechanism is accessed by a very long key, through the funnel. The propeller shaft is driven by an ingenius arrangement of universal couplings, and flexible shaft.

With about 6 turns of the key, the ship had no problems going two lengths of the pool. I now have to build a small wooden transportable jetty, so I can set that up at the shallow end, and will seem to give a reason for having the boat in the pool.

All I need now, is for Märklin to produce some accessories, such as life preservers (rings), deck chairs, figures, and coils of rope. I don't think the model is to a particular scale, but my guess is about 1:50 (or O gauge) accessories would look OK.

UserPostedImage

These later images (May 17 2010) show Jolanda from the port side. This time I have added the life boats, and the flags, so it is complete. This photo displays the bow profile to advantage, indicative of a beautiful design, and why the model is so desirable.

I really like this model, and I hope you like it.

Thanks for the photos Kimball. It really looks magnificent! Would the ultimate accessory be a loco smoke unit in the funnel?

Yes Gary, that would do nicely, say a 9 volt battery should do the trick.
And I think the smoke should be a little darker than what we use for the locos.

By the way, the ship is about 82cms long.

And I jsut thought of another accessory.
A mermaid, or other type of figurehead, that can be attached under the bowsprit.

Hi Nev and Tony, thanks for comments.

Yes, Nev, I should really have a launching party, however the BBQ has never been fired up, and I think it has wasp nests in it (or something just as nasty). I bought it about 4 years ago. I think the BBQ would be mandatory.

I have unwittingly made a few enemies, as my wife often says "Oh, you'll have to come around for a BBQ sometime". Trouble is we hever have one, and people don't forget that.BigGrin

There are a series of accessories available:

Underwater 3D CS2 with pressurized knobs
What about a launching ramp, the one that Märklin produces to guide the loco and carriages onto the rail ?
Interior lighting with led's.
Telex coupling to release the anker(s)
piazzo motor for the stairway to go up and down.
There is a sound modul available with 4 speakers with a harbour message: This is not the titanic, please come aboard and mind the gap (english message) or pi.. off and get your own boat (Australian message)
There is also a limited edtion with a long range key available for longer journeys, e.g. the 2010 marklin users.net.forum meeting in germany.
Prices start at the bottom of the harbour scheme, depending which class you are travelling with, bookings are taken at the BBQ office with a complimentary pool drink with different aged flavours (2-60).

Thankyou John and Stephen.
John, I didn't know Märklin had made those accessories.
I will write to Märklin, enclosing your list, to check prices and availability.

preferable write in german and use the international ship code: dammit

You realize of course 103 years before your successful launch, a sister ship in Italy "Principessa Jolanda" sank when launched.

that would make a nice radio control boat for the pool or small pond, even if it would cancel out the old-time characteristics.

Hi James, Kodiak and John,

There is a manual windlass at the stern to adjust the rudder, and it can be locked in one position if required.

Märklin state in the literature that it is not suitable for retro-fitting of remote control gear. I guess that is because it needs electrical power, and you have to manually wind up the clock work mechanism anyway.

I rather like the model, because it is an old-world sort of thing. That has its charm. It does not tax my brain too much, so it is certainly very relaxing getting it to run.

I wonder how faithfully they followed the original 1910 model?
The fact is, the model sits well in the water, is very stable, just like a real boat, and rolls under wave just like a real boat. I wonder if they had to employ a naval architect to ensure that it sat in the water correctly, or is this just simple mathematics? And of course the weight of the mechanism and shaft, and upper deck had to be set precisely to keep the boat in trim.

The boat gets up quite a speed, a good walking pace if given enough length.

It appears from the literature, that they may have made only 2009 of these models. A certificate came with it.

regards
Kimball

It must be relaxing watching it going up and down the pool and it does'nt need any nuclear powered boats to protect her against malicious damages.

Do you think the salt or chlorine water could damage the hull paint or dull it in time ?
If it would be mine, I would'nt upgrade it

Hi Kimball
In a book I have here about Märklin toys build between 1895 and 1914, there is a picture of the original, and from what I can see the repro is pretty close to the original.
The only major missing detail appears to be the absence of 4 rescue boats.
But that seems easy to fix, since the davids are already in place.
Looks like a great toy!

Now, here I thought the ships were display stuff only and imagined they would sink as a rock if put into water...

I was surprised that it is a real usable toy, also somewhat silently proud of that fact since it seems M has made good quality toys also in the past... Imagine being a kid in the 1910:s and get a big metal boat you can play with in water... Opened my mind up a little, so to speak... That's 100 years ago...

Hi Jacques,
Thanks for your reference to the earlier catalogue. The rescue boats came with the model, but I did not fit them for the test run - naughty, naughty...!

Hi Panayotis, Jim, Juhan and John,
I doubt if the pool water would hurt the model, so long as it is wiped dry after use. The pool looks so nice, simply because here in Queensland we have weather that is described in the tourist literature as "beautiful one day, perfect the next".

I can imagine this boat being the sort used on the Swiss lakes, or elsewhere on the continent. Come to think of it, I think I saw one like this in "The African Queen", where Bogart's boat ended up being used as a make-shift torpedo, and sank the splendid German lake cruiser. With its bewhiskered captain.

regards
Kimball

Hi Tony, Svein, Kenneth, Kev, David, Nev and Rick,
Thanks for comments.
As far as the BBQ is concerned, yes, the fire would certainly get rid of the wasps. They regularly haunt our garden, and I have a permanent fix on hand. A pole with a kerosene soaked rag wound around one end, leans in a corner of my shed.

I think the problem is that I am so used to my wife's extraordinary cooking, there seems little point in having a BBQ.

As far as affording a Jolanda for the collection, I gave it to my wife for Valentines day. She has been giving me this sort of weird look ever since, as though she doesn't quite believe me. Smile

She has not however taken it out of the space where I store my trains, so I sort of still own it!!!

regards

What!!!, you mean I will find the butt end of the ticket, and she will be gone without me!!!

Sneaky

Thankyou Alonso and Ralph for your comments.
You are correct, the catalogue only gives you a hint.
I think that is true of all Märklin models.
It is like faith (or trust), in the Märklin capability, so you have to be bold, and say you want it.
I have to make up my mind from the catalogue, and order the item well in advance. I think the boat took almost 12 months.
I have never been disappointed with a Märklin item.
