Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly is a "Hobby" Lok? There's no equivalent in Z scale.

Hi Mark,

I would include the V80 diesels, 36080 and 36081, the Br24 36240, the Br81 36320, the KLVM tank engine 36871, and ICE 36711, all of which have similar motors and decoders and low prices. (I'm not too sure about the Br24, though.)

I believe there are also some starter sets and train packs which include some of the above locos.

Gary,

"Hobby" is the name Marklin give to cheaper, lower specification locomotives and wagons in their HO range.

It started I believe in the 1990's, when the former Primex range was brought back in to the Marklin brand. They were originally simplified Marklin models sold under the Primex brand in Supermarkets etc. When Primex was discontinued, they created the Hobby brand, and sold these loks, and other basic ones from the Marklin range, as "Hobby" locomotives. They also included the metal 24cm coaches and some basic goods wagons in the Hobby range.

A few years ago the Hobby name seemed to disappear, but it was then resurrected with the current generation of cheaper models.

I hope this clears it up a bit for you.

Gary, generally speaking Hobby locos are 'cut down' versions or cheaper versions of models probably more suited to use by children. They may not be super detailed, but they are usually very well built to withstand the rigours of kids playing with them. Having said that, they hold some appeal for more serious collectors as they may be of models that are not available elsewhere in Marklin's catalog. You normally find the Hobby program towards the front of the catalog with a bunch of starter sets, some locos and some freight and passenger cars.

Ray and David hi,

As Märklin refers to it the "Hobby" line is an attempt to provide a somewhat more sturdy collection of models especially for children. I have noticed that Märklin have been careful to choose models with less details (such as Br216) to include in this line.

I've had a few Hobby locos and they were not really cut-down but my experience with them is limited.

Regards,

Cem.

Yes, of course, this was marketed as a Primex lok. My apologies! The very similar 3080 was marketed as a Hobby lok for a while.

Hi,

I think Primex stuff is very confusing.

On one hand you have locos like the one above, on the other you have superior sets like the Orient Express. Very strange indeed.

I feel like Primex brand was not very well defined when it first introduced.

Cem, have you seen this link?

http://www.frankenbahn.de/primex/primexframeE.htm

It explains the whole history of the Primex brand very well. Highly recommended reading!

Thanks everyone for the explanations, and especially Thomas for that photo! Now I understand why there's no equivalent in Z.

Cem,

I agree with you the branding seems confusing. Much like what LGB tried to do with the "Toy Train" range. Models went in and out of the brand and it was a confusing mess.

I enjoy reading all the postings and finally had to join up myself.

Regards,

Lou

Hi Lou, welcome to the forum.

Unless you really are 13 I suggest you go back to your profile and enter your date of birth again. It's a quirk of the system that seems to get everyone!

Good luck, and enjoy yourself on this forum.

In my opinion there are two great things about hobby loco's.

1. Good value for money

2. Most people can get them in and out of the box without damaging the
fine details that more expensive Locos.Smile

I think it was a good idea to update the list in the first post - so we have only one up-to-date list at the start of this thread (only you and the webmaster can update this).

Primex:

To keep the name alive, Märklin launched two locomotives after the actual stop of Primex production.

Both locomotives were delivered in Märklin boxes, but in orange colour.
