Maybe this should be in Digital... I just fitted a Seuthe #11 to my SZD 37159. Very easy installation -- just insert and push down. Upon squirting some Seuthe smoke oil in -- lots of smoke! Then I got to thinking...how does the smoke unit cope with no oil? It appears that the decoder in 37159 is not set up to turn the smoke gen ON or OFF. [:(] Will the smoke gen unit be damaged by being ON all the time with no oil in it? |

Hi Damon
The 37159 comes w a 6090 decoder, so I suspect the smoke unit is tied with the headlight. Mine doesn't smoke(!?), but I can check the connections later.

If you install another decoder you may use one of the functions (e.g. f1) to control the smoke generator. |

That shouldn't be a problem. I have a 3046 loco that came with the smoke generator installed back in 1975. Digital was a long way off, those generators were always on while the loco was running. I ran this loco sometimes with smoke oil, but most of the time without. It has covered a fair amount of ground and it still works today.

I use a relay to switch it off. See towards the end of http://layout.mixmox.com...stalling_digital_decoderDigital current is higher than the old 16vAC and the older decoders were designed to be used as a various voltages up to 16V AC certainly not full 16V AC all the time. Digital power is on all teh time and higher so I do not let my smoke generators run unless I am using them. Even when using them, my software switched them OFF if it goes into a tunnel or invisible areas of the layout. This also conserves digital power. |

I just mentioned it already in another thread but here again:
The "smoker selection rule" is quite simple: - for analog and switchable digital operation use the normal 16V units - for Delta and other non switchable digital operation use the 19V units (i.e. direct connection between the smoker and the slider)
16V units are #7226, 72270 and Seuthe #10, 20 (pink bottom inlay) 19V units are Seuthe #11 and #24 (green bottom inlay)
Note: 16V units are actually specified for voltages between 10 and 16V, 19V units for voltages between 16 and 22V.

Dale,
Have you any experience with using solid-state relays?
They are very small (particularly the surface-mount devices), but I'm having trouble finding the frequency response specifications. They generally seem aimed at 50/60Hz applications (unsurprisingly). I wonder how they cope with #kHz power?
A relay does solve the problem of the potentially variable voltage difference provided by a digital decoder output against chassis ground. I assume a "19V" unit would be appropriate in this case...

Dale, The relay in your photo is mechanical. It's been at least 15 years since I last looked at "solid-state relays", and things have moved on! [:I] It seems the low-power units are equally at home with AC or DC. I answered my own question [:I]
BTW the "19V" was about the smoke units, not the relay.

cool, let me know if you find a nice small and cheap solid state relay.... |

The answer to your prayers is: http://www.loksound.de/index.php?showId=133Scroll down to product 51963. I've used it for things like switching a whole bunch of coach lamps from the lok. Current rating is 1 amp. It's very, very small, you can fit it anywhere.

Don't think so, it makes a relatively loud mechanical click when it actuates.

a loud click would indicate to me that is IS mechanical. |
