As some of you may know, and some of you may or may not care, I am finally working on my (first) permanent layout, and as such I am going to be doing some models to add realism to the layout.

I am new to this hobby, and I also haven't built a plastic model since I was 16 years old, and that was of an F16.... (I am now 35 btw).. So I guess I have two quick questions about the four Faller kits I just ordered. They are the Covered Platform Kit (120199) and Extension , Overhead Signal tower Kit (120124), and the Gantry Crane Kit (120162)...

A) Are these advanced skill level models that require a lot of plastic cement, and several days to build? Or can I put them together in an hour or so, and lots of snap-n-fit?
B) Are they painted well enough out of the box? OR is it a must to re-paint them?

Any advice in this area would be greatly appreciated as always!

Thanks

Sam

Sam: I have the covered platform and extension. They are certainly not difficult. In my experience, Faller has excellent directions in their kits. You should have no trouble with any of them. I would suggest that you get a glue applicator with a very fine tip. I use the Faller "Super Expert" glue. The glue comes out of a thin metal tube like a hypodermic needle (without the point). It allows you to control the placement and volume of glue very effectively. I have tried a Testors product with a similar type of applicator, but prefer the Faller. I have built many models for my platform (many of which I don't have a place for yet... Smile) using Faller, Kibri and Vollmer kits. They are all excellent for fit and finish. I prefer the Faller, though. As to paint, it is up to you. I generally don't paint my kits. The variety of colors provided is sufficient and looks good when assembled. Some of the folks on this forum do. It is a personal choice, but in my opinion not necessary.

Added: And yes we DO care. I get ideas from everybodys pictures and comments that I incorporate into my plans. Keep up the good work and keep posting your progress.

Hi Sam.
I haven't built those exact kits, but I have made several other Faller kits, and I find them very good. Their building instructions are the best I've seen from any plastic kit maker.
As for the glue, I also use the Faller Super Expert. But I find that I sometimes also use the Vollmer Superzement S30. It is glue with a small brush. I find it quite good for glueing larger pieces together.

For the re-paint, I don't do it. Not much anyway. A while ago, I gave it a go with an old model, that I could spare for the experiment. I'm still not sure if I like the result or not:

I think I have overdone the walls, but I like the roof and the chimney.

Sam, first: we do care! wink
But to get back on topic, I personally like Faller kits very much, they mostly fit together perfectly (except for some models like the Roller Coaster for example).
I like to repaint the models, since I think that the models are out-of-the-box a little to clean and have a little to much of a plastic-look. If you feel like you don't want to ruin a model by painting it you could try wheatering it with pastel, if it doesn't hold to well you could spray the surface with hair styling spray (or whatever it's called in english) first. After that you could use the pastel to tone the colours a little by just "drawing" on it, I prefer making pastel powder and use that on the model. If you like the result: fix it with hair styling spray, if you don't: wash it of and try again. wink

As you can see it can take a lot of effort to build a model exactly the way you want it. But the only skill you'll really need is a little patience and reading the manual. It won't be any trouble at all! Have fun with it!

Another small tip: not particularly usefull for these models, but probably later on.
In the manuals it's mostly suggested to glue to curtains right on the window "glass", it looks way better if you glue the curtains on match sticks or something to create a little distance between the "glass" and the curtains.

That's a good tip Sander - I'll remember it.
I also like Faller stuff, but I have recently also discovered Artitec models made from resin. They are easy to put together but the detail is stunning. Faller glue does not seem to work on resin - so I've used Superglue for this.
ps. Kramm has lots of specials on model kits right now so I've splashed out a bit!

Sam, My wife has been building all the kits on our layout. None are real difficult, just time consumming. She is a sticler for detail, and weathers all the models as well as adding shrubs and other exterior details. I will post some photos of her latest work later today. The Faller and Vollmer models are by far have the most detailed instructions.

I have built in excess of 100 Faller kits over the years and find then excellent. As to how long to build...just take your time and it will be worthwhile. Rushing a model to get it on the layout usually spoils the finished article.

Thanks for the outpour of help and advice guys! my "care" comment wasn't really meant to say that you all wouldn't care, as I've never seen such a classy group of guys on the internet as I've seen on this site! Thanks again..

Steen, I'll work on that right away! I totally forgot about it! Frankly however, my stuff doesn't hold a candle to any of the stuff I've seen here, so I'm a bit embarrassed to show it.. but I will. Work in progress it is..

As for 36 hours for the Bonn station? Wow you have patience Steve!

Again thanks to all!

Steen... ok, go look now but don't laugh! biggrin

Anyway, Pardon the bad photography, but I was using my wife's camera with a lens on it that frankly I have no idea how to use! But I'll get better pics up later as I make the layout better. The area's where you see plywood is the spots that I have plans to add building/and other items from my Faller kits..

The spot with the dismembered caboose (From the fuerwehr set) is where a jumble of wires are that need to be hidden.. (Temporary fix), and the two maintenance sheds are being re-ordered so I can build them again with a proper glue - the stuff I had was not intended for plastic!

And as my website says, 1/2 of my controls, kits, and trains/rolling stock are still on order/or en-route from Germany!

Sam: I also built the Bonn station. I didn't pay attention to how many hours but it took over a week of evening sessions. That kit has over 1000 parts. One other point...my Bonn station was missing a part (one of the roof windows.) I really don't know if it was left out or I lost in in packing and unpacking the kit as I built it. The point is, that I e-mailed Faller with the part number and they sent one to me no charge by mail immediately. Great service.

Is it fair to say that the Bonn station is far more complex than than the items I'm going to be building?

Anyway, the'll be here in a week or so, and in another week or so, I'll post pics! AND update my personal webspace.

Sam: I don't know that I'd say the Bonn station was more complex, just larger. It doesn't require any more skills, just more time. As with all Faller kits, the instructions are easy to follow.

Thanks Ira, and I'm quite content with it so far, but after look again at Ron's layout I see just how far away my ultimate goal is and it's down right depressing! [B)] Really amazing layout Ron!

But really, given the financial and dimensional (room) restrictions on my, I'm actually quite excited to get this moving..

WOW SAM! HUUUGGGGEEE progress in 2 weeks! You weren't kidding when you said you wanted to get it going! Now you just have to avoid the phase where you get sick of building and just play with trains for the next year before you get working on the layout again! biggrin I can't wait to see more progress.

Sam: Thanks for the comments on my layout...I still have a long way to go to realize my dream. As to your layout, It looks great. You will enjoy it. Most of the fun is in dreaming, planning and building, at least to me. One of the real joys is getting a new section of track laid and running a train down it.

I love your display cases. I don't have a free wall right now to mount cases. My younger son has been living with us for several years saving for a down payment on a house. He has finally bought one (next door to us, incidentally) and is moving out. When he moves all his computers, TV, stereo, etc out of the basement I will have room to expand some. I have big plans for the space. One of my goals is to build a wall to separate my train space from the storage space. I will then FINALLY have a place to mount some display cabinets and get the loks and rolling stock I can't fit on the layout out of the boxes.

Thanks for all of the kind words guys.. and the tips. I think I experienced a jolt of progress over the past two weeks, but now it's going to slow down to a more moderate pace. I expect the arrival of my Central Station will force me to install the turnout decoders, which will then require a whole new level of work, then will come the catenary.. Anyway if anyone wants to order them, I found the company that made the display cases to be both very reasonable in price, and very high in quality. So much so, that I wrote them a letter of recommendation. www.customdisplaycases.com is their site. I really wanted to get some of the SMT cases, but MAN WERE THEY PRICY!

BTW, John (5HorrizonsRR John that is), next time you're in Phoenix, call me and I'll show you the 4228 with the problem.. And get your first hand opinions on the layout.

They came out really nice.Smile I like your trains too.wink I'm not being nitpicky here, so please don't take this the wrong way, but the baggage car for the Rheingold set should be behind the locomotive. There was actually a law about it back in those days. Passanger cars were forbidden from being directly behind locomotives back in the 20's and 30's. It's your fantasy land so anything you want goes, just for your own edification. The Rheingold would run with baggage cars on either end so that when it came time to change out locomotives, the new one would just hook-up to other end away it went with out having to waste time changing out the baggage car as well to meet regs.

Same is happening here with me.Sadly I don't have a proper room for a permanent layout and as a substitute I'm collecting more and more. This is also very satisfying, however when I run one my favourite locos now and then on a temporary layout it makes me ache for a nice permanent layout.

Thanks Steve... I am waiting on CS to come out, so as to install decoders into turnouts and then I will affix permanent road and grass, trees, etc... for now it's just "work in progress"

I have 13 decoders on order that will ship WHEN my CS ships... I have no need for them now, and for $500 I can do without holding onto them for nothing.
