On the little KLVM locomotive (latest version) is a decoder installed. The decoder suggest to can do more, see the red circle on the picture.

Can anybody tell were these connections are made for?

From left to right I suggest to call them —>

Most probable use for those contacts is to download the program into the chip.
Other decoders (e.g., Uhlenbrock) have similar contact points on the PCBoard.

It is the KLVM from start set 29156. I think 36871 is the same.

I think it is the same decoder as this one: http://stummi.foren-city.de/htopic,2117,60760.html except for some transistors. If you look closely you see that on the right side it misses some of them.

As described there it is a connection to program the PIC/decoder. I think you can also connect extra functions to the pins if you amplify them as described...

You can find a few suggestions here:

http://www.x-train.de/decoder/digital/60760.htm

The most useful tip in this case seems to be the "Alzheimer cure" - to connect a capacitor between the 1st and 5th of these solder pads. You could also connect interior lighting or other funtions if you find the right connectors and have skills to solder a wire in the right place.

The essence from the X-train site:
"As a cheap way into the world of digital, Marklin have introduced a decoder that can be programmed like an mfx decoder (i.e. on the track; however, it is NOT an mfx decoder). It has NO function outputs and does NOT register automatically with the MS/CS. The decoder has a PIC Processor 16F676 and two complementary MOSFET drivers for the high-efficiency (5-pole) motor. The light outputs are switched conventionally using a transistor each.

THE 5-POLE CONNECTOR AT THE TOP IS FOR PROGRAMMING THE PIC AND IS OF NOT INTEREST (YET) FOR THE END USER.

<picture>

ANTI-ALZHEIMER
You can solve this problem with a capacitor and a resistor. You simply have to put the capacitor in series with the resistor and connect this to the programming pins. The programming pins are of no further use to the end user anyway. The resistor is required in order to limit the charging current of the capacitor, otherwise the PIC gets confused and stops working.

The capacitor should have a value of 470nF to 1000nF.
A voltage of 6V is plenty; this means the cap remains nice and small.
The resistor has a value of R=10KOhm.

PLEASE TAKE CARE to get the polarity of the capacitor right!"

It might be worthwile recognizing that this decoder (as well some others alike) are in certain details not the same as the one described on the X-Train pages.

For those of you being already proud owners of that new cute little KLVM, you might have recognized the "rear light" on top of the decoder pcb - it's sole function is to indicate proper (re-)programming.

However, you could still also use it as a cabin light when driving backwards. biggrin

See also the corresponding thread about this loco in the HO section.
