Rhätische Bahn, Switzerland, day 1

Updated 28.04.2013

In October 2006 my wife and I was invited by some good friends in Switzerland.  We had some interesting train trips, over four days.
Here are some of our impressions from the trips.

Day 1
Winterthur to Guarda
The tour started in WinterthurSBB took us to Landquart.

From the upper floor of one of SBB's nice coaches. The pulling power was a class Re 460

In Landquart we changed to Rhätische Bahn, to travel to Guarda.

From Landquart the trip went through a long tunnel, between Klosters and Saglians. Special car trains also go through this tunnel,
from Saglianis to Klosters-Selfranga and the opposite.  There are very good car loading systems in both ends.

Our train continues to Scoul.  Ge 4/4 II 625

From Guarda station to the village itself it is very steep uphill.  A post bus with four wheel drive takes the passengers from the train to the village.

Hotel Meisser in Guarda, where we stayed three nights.

We got very good food:

From one of the hotel rooms:

Guarda is a very special village, hanging on to a steep mountain wall.  The railway and the main road is in the bottom of the deep valley.
Views from our hotel room window one morning:

A view from the village, at the bus stop:

Big contrasts, also shot from the bus stop:

A couple of times we had to walk to and from the station.  This path is on the way down, much shorter than the road:

This is the road from the village, seen from the path:

Some more trains at Guarda station:

Day 2

Day 3
Guarda - Samedan - Poschiavo - Pontresina - Guarda, with the Bernina Express

Day 4
Return from Guarda to Winterthur

This was a wonderful trip!
It is highly recommended to visit Switzerland and their fantastic railway network.
