Was the Alpha track the predecessor to the C track system? Have a look at this old track from an eBay auction.

Yes it was. It is not the same, but materials and track connections certainly have inspired the C-track design. The roadbed was darker than C-track and I don't think the rail profile is the same. It was sold with the Alpha line of futuristic toy train products which also had trucks, buggies, interchangeable cargo modules and such... The last catalog it appeared in was the 1995/96 one.
