Hi all,
This is my first post. I have been reading through the forum for quite a while and had only recently restarting the hobby with Marklin HO - a recent convert from N-scale Minitrix which I stopped collecting more than 12 years ago.
I bought a 29851 starter set. While the RE460 that came with the set is incredibly smooth running and quiet, after one day of smooth operation, the Ae 6/6 got quite worse. It started to become noisy and stuttering from the speed curve of 40% onwards. I put a drop of oil as per the instruction that came with the set, and things does improve at the top end but the stuttering continued at the mid-range, and the loc remained noisy. All other functions are ok though.
Is there anything practical that I can still do or is it pretty much a warranty claim and off it goes to Germany?

Did you put the drop of oil on the 5 pole rotor axle? If not, that is probably the source of the noise.

Hi Tim, welcome to the forum. Good to see another Kiwi here.
I'd suggest you check the loco's gears and motor for any dirt / grunge, and clean if necessary. Also check the motor brushes to ensure they are not sticking - just release a bit of tension with a jeweller's screwdriver. Also, you might want to clean the slider and the wheels with some rubbing alcohol, as dirt on them will cause a bad electrical connection. Good luck!!

Welcome Tim! I have the same set but both my locos are runningg flawlessly. Sometime, however, with new locos or with some that have been stored for a long time, you get some "stiking" points. I suggest to run the loco without the cover and check all running gear. However, if the problem persists you surely have to contact M* service. |

Hi Thanks heaps for all your suggestions. Have rechecked the Ae 6/6. Some of the gearings were very dry, particularly from the axle heading out of the 5-pole rotor. I had put a tiny drop of oil on the drier sections ( a bit worried that I might be putting too much). Result: Jerkiness almost completely gone across the range. From 50% power and above the Ae 6/6 is smooth and quiet, and can now run slightly faster than the RE460  It's still making some noise (though nowhere nearly as bad as before) at around 35% range. Will check out further in the next few days whether it can be improved. The beauty of not living in Germany is that you won't know when you will get your baby back after a warranty claim. [:0] I've only just got the set after an anxious two weeks wait for the shipment to NZ. Thanks for the welcome.. |

I have this loco too, and I use it very much... I can tell its mechanics works ever perfectly, and has no troubles even after many hours of working. So I hope it's just a testing problem (may be also it needs a little settlement of brushes?)! Regards Pietro

After carefully cleaning the gears and wheels of the loco in the past three days, I can happily say that the Ae 6/6 is now running very smoothly and quietly at any speed range. Apparantly there is quite a build up of dirt inside the loco - so will probably keep an eye on her for a while.
The Ae 6/6 is now so quiet in fact, that I now able to notice that the RE460 would benefit from some cleaning as well.
Lesson is now learnt well. Never underestimate the power of cleaning your locos![^] |
