WIthout opening the locomotive, how would one know if there is a permanent magnet (i.e. a DC motor) in Roco AC engines, and other non-Märklin three-rail non-digital AC engines? If there is a permanent magnet, what is your experience installing a Märklin 60902 decoder (or any other Märklin-Motorola compatible decoder) into the engine?

To be corrected: I don't think that any manufacturer beside Märklin and HAG use all current motors. When they make a AC model they only install a slider and insert a direction relay. Nowadays I think they only supply the latter; inside is a NMRA plug with 2 diodes for the light when running DC, this simple plug is replaced by the plug of the relay (or decoder with plug).
I'm not thinking of installing a 60902; I would install a Lokpilot instead. Which has the plug. I see no reason to pay for a 60902, and the extra work with installation (if NMRA socket). OK; here is an answer to your question: if the box is marked with the NMRA plug symbol it certainly is a DC motor.
BTW, the 5 pole motor of Roco is really good!
Good luck. Lars

Peter,
Roco engines are already DC, so no need for conversion. As for the decoder, use a LocPilot. They are a perfect match (Roco uses LoPi's in their AC-models).

There is one disadvantage with the LokPilot though: It does not apply any speed / acceleration control in conventional AC mode. The Märklin 60902 actually applies the maximum speed and acceleration delay in conventioal AC mode too.

And so does the Lenz 930 (that Roco used as their "AC"-decoder just prior to the Lokpilot)... It also has a relay on board so it remembers the last direction. Nice decoder, even if it has its own issues of implementation considerations... With Roco 5-pole motors, it works fine though... |

Hi all,
Thanks for your comments! So, anything else than Mä or HAG (like Rivarosso, Brawa etc.) actually has DC motor.

I'd like to come back to the original question again because it is of considerable interest to me...the conversion to digital of ROCO AC engines.
Specifically, I have a ROCO E140, E112, and a Rivarossi E17 - all the rail.
What say you to the conversion of these engines with the LokSound2 decoder?
I have one former Marklin HAMO engine - the BR 86173 that was converted to three rail using the Lokpilot.
