It looks nice, especially the wheels. What bothers me is the fact that M can't seem to fix the loco-tender distance. This shouldn't be a big problem.

The distance is adjustable (as already known from other recent models, like the BR44 or BR50). Makes definitely sense as still a large number of Märklin customers use R1 tracks. Likewise the tube protection which can be mounted at the cylinders if the track radius is large enough.

Some interesting changes:
No false "boxes" in front of the Führerhaus, which were created to hause the motor.
New cover for the driving gear, at the center of the 3rd driving axle (typical of a Trix design, see picture from bottom side).
The Feuerbuchse now looks prototypical, no longer that wide, as in old models.
I can bet that the motor is located at the center of the boiler, rendering a protoyipical Feuerhaus with enough room for the crew.
A very nice model indeed.

Still I think it's crappy. A nice kinematic can do the job also without the need of being adjustable. Or have roco,GFN and the others patented this for DC?biggrinbiggrinbiggrin Most of their models will do R1,even brawas 06 will.

Hi Bart,

have you ever seen a recent Märklin steamer of the type I mentioned? Cool

If so you'd know that they have a kinematic at both, the engine and the tender. SmileSmileSmile

By the way, what should DC have to do with this? biggrin

ROCO, GFN, BRAWA knowingly produce models for both, the two rail and center rail system. Actually most ROCO steamers are specified for a minimum radius of 415mm!

Regardless, I am just eager waiting for the delivery of my BR01 like all other fans of this fine new Märklin model! winkwinkwink

Here are some more pics. Enjoy them!

UserPostedImage

Quite short coupled tender.

UserPostedImage

View at the firedoor (Feuerbüchse), which will flicker with red light when the function is activated. There is also plenty of space for the driver and "coaly" in the cabin. Smile

UserPostedImage

Tender details (separate tubes, etc.)

UserPostedImage

Again the very fine wheelsets and springs.

UserPostedImage

The fine detailed loco front.

UserPostedImage

No problem in getting through R1!!!

UserPostedImage

Personally I think it will be hard for any "true Märklinist" to get around this superb model. Driving characteristics are just impressive.

The catalog I have lists it has having the compact C-sine drive, I used to have the 39103 lok and it ran supurbly, espicaly when I am used to my older style loks. I am debating on spending the money on this one, might look a bit odd as the rest of my loks are older ones from the 60's and 70's. Lutz, are all the drive wheels geared together like on past loks? Or do the side rods drive the the other wheels.
Due to budget shortfall, the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off....mgmt.

Hi Mike,

CORRECTION:

The motor drives the last wheelset. The motor and gear is completely located in the so called "Stehkessel" which allows a complete free and undisturbed view across all wheels. For some "imagination" of the model construction a look at the explosion drawing might be helpful.

AUX1 drives (as usual) the smoker, AUX2 the flickering light of the firebox. The additional possibility to mount as well a Telex with this model which I mentioned above will need AUX4 (+ some amplifier).

Thank you Lutz for all good info you gave! A real pleasure to read you!
This model looks nice.
Something is bothering me:
are the wheels all metal molded?Including spokes?

BTW,with the new mechanics ( motor + transmission) do you find this new model as powerfull as former BR 01 with traditional Marklin mechanics ( 5 poles motor), more powerful, less powerful ?
I agree to say that "traditional 5 poles motor" is incredibly powerful, comparing to the rest of MRR in the world.
Some people used to say that Marklin models were too much & unnecessarily powerful( for me, it was not "unnecessarily") .

Regards

Hi Roland, All,

Thanks for the compliments [:I]. As long as my contributiond help in sharing and the increase in a "better" understanding of Märklin, its products, etc. it's fine with me.

I could not see that the spokes would be of any different material than the rest of the wheels; at least the lack of red paint on the outer ring is no indicator as this is the same for most other Märklin steamers.

The engine drives very smooth, incredibly quiet and yet has very good pulling power (no problem getting a long 12 car train over a 3% hill. It also doesn't roll down (as some of you might recall from the Württ. C) due to the "snail gear". I have not (yet) measured the exact pulling force, but I think this will be soon published with the first model railroad magazine review.

Surely there will be some comparison with the "old good" F800/3008/3026/3048/P3193, but IMHO it will be quite difficult to compare the 3-pole LFCM of these models with this new compact C-sine.

Hello,

This model has no Telex, but looking at the spare part list it seems like it is
possible to use the "new" Telex's from the Br. 03, 41, 44, 50 etc.

But are there any functions on the decoder left to control the Telex confused

Well,Other class 01 such as 39103,39104 dont have telex.

What catalogue number did class 44 have a telex?

Hi all,

Lutz: thank you very much for your great and very detailed photos. Are you going to upload a review of the model? I'm very interested in reading opinions about its sounds, because this will be the first steam locomotive with sound that I'll surely buy wink

Seems like new model locomotives are appearing everywhere, so in the next weeks we should have some new reviews in the section: BR 01, E 10, BR 290...

Kind regards.

I am thinking about it, but I still "owe" first another member (and hence this group) a comment on the model/series he had reviewed several days ago.

Furthermore, I have even new models that are worth a review description which you didn't list, like the new V200 and Am 4/4 (#39800, #39801, both really very fine models), the BR151 (#39582) or the new BR 143 (#37433), not to forget my now complete fleet of Swiss LS cars.

Together with the new longer cars it's just a great "assemble"!

I am more than happy with this model; driving characteristics with the new C-sine are just "superb". Next I'll also add a smoker and as I had mentioned already earlier a Telex could be added too. IMHO the pcb in the tender even has neccessary provisions for the telex components.

How do they make the firebox glow?
Cut a hole and install a diffuse LED?
And finally: What kind of C-sine motor is installed in this steam gigant?

There is a little pcb with a red flickering LED behind the diffused firedoor.

It has the new compact C-Sine installed. Max. speed is factory set at 90% and it runs perfect (at least my model, but I hope all other's too).

I have my Br01 to. Great Runner. Beautiful steamengine.
But I have two little pionts of critic. The wormwheel has has to be oiled every 20 hours?

And pulling power on steap hills (5,5%) is about 5 coaches at low speed on m-track. At higher speed it is not a big problem.

But the model drives great on my m-track layout. Even through R1 curves.

M-track with a CS2.
