Hi all,

Hope everyone is going well.

I am doing my first digital conversion, the first locomotive I’m tackling is the Marklin 3310 steam locomotive.

Luckily, I have some other locomotives that were converted by a specialist so I have something to compare to.

My question relates the installation of the 5 pole motor and those big teal coloured interference suppression chokes that comes with it.

Every conversion I see has them soldered directly to the motor shield. This makes it tight when I place the body back on so wanted to ask whether anyone has tried to install the ‘chokes’ onto the decoder a the wire soldered onto the shield?

Since there is so much room in the tender, it would make things so much easier.

Hopefully I’m making sense - be great to know your thoughts.

Regards,

Eddie

Sure yes, for steamers with space in the tender but not near the motor that is perfectly ok. I have done multiple conversions like that. The inductors/chokes just need to be in series between motor and decoder, but where exactly is of less importance.
Also do not forget to remove the capacitors between a motor shield contact and the loco body, if any. Only the single cap between the 2 motor contacts can stay.

Hi Bert,

Thank you so much for the feedback and providing your experience. This will make things so much easier, including servicing in the future as well!

I was sure that this was possible but just in case, always good to collaborate and ask the question - just in case.

I have the conversion kit from Marklin, the motor shield has one cap which is staying.

Much appreciated,

Eddie
