Finally... I’ve put down a length of track, opened my Flying Scotsman, a Krokodil and the cheap electric “start up” locomotive (36509). The latter seems to be to a different scale. Is it my eyesight or is it genuinely “too big”? And does this apply to all start up items (ie should I avoid them?!). I had naively assumed that they would be to the same scale albeit less refined. I do quite like the humble 36509 so I might get another 1 or 2... just not to run on the same day as the other more expensive offerings. And I guess the “start up” rolling stock is also on the large size? (It’s only rolling up and down 2m of straight track at the moment but, goodness, the Flying Scotsman looks magnificent) Tim

The 2 axle start up locos are built to a price. In order to get the best manufacture value/playability, the motor is rather large. To fit in a HO scale loco the body has to be made wider than a strict scale model. In the 36509 the model is probably freelance, something designed by Märklin from a generic prototype. Kimball |

The Start Up range is also described as for kids from the age of 6+
I have a few items from the Start Up series just for the fun of it and because they were cheap.

Well, that little lok seems to be from: which did service with Ruhrkohle AG, which may help explain the "beefier" nature of the beast! Whisper Mode On which is not to say that Mother M did not add bits and bobs here and there Whisper Mode Off |

And, because I have a history of wantonly spending other people's money... 46241 or 4824 Enjoy Ruhrkohle! Granted, one could also go with 4413...with some "RAG" decals (home-made probably)... |

Well spotted. To keep the price down they have modelled it without: handrails much lettering/numbers buffer beam stripes vertically elongated windows at cab front and rear It certainly contains the basic elements to create a decent model with what we call super-detailing or DIY detailing. I have one of the 2 axle diesels on which I based my assertion the body is wider than normal. And even on this electric model the absence of the frontal windows indicates a body widening. Kimball |

Some start-up items are in the regular program but minus the blister package.

I have the Start Up 29453 Container Train starter set The DHG 700 has a horn sound and a static motor sound , and a blinking light. Even if it's for 6-12 years old kids, I love it ! Best Regards Joël |
