Hi

The Pig has been misbehaving.
For a start, I have had to clip off its ears because it fouls all sorts of things on my layout.
Which is probably sacrilege to many collectors.
Things like platform awnings on freight and passenger stations, tunnel mouths, and lineside trees.
And the tail fouls most vehicles it is pulling, and I believe the nose does so as well.

Why is this?
Because it is an outsize vehicle, outside the loading gauge, and outside of a genuine 1;87 scale vehicle.
That goes for length, breadth and height.
30455

The Pig is #30455 in the Märklin catalog, although not seen in a few years now.
The mechanism is basic like the digital KLVM locos such as the 36873 but a much earlier decoder (Delta).
It is a robust design, runner and hauler.
The loco is useful enough, hauling transfer trains between depots, and sent around on repetitive tasks like cleaning the tracks.

But apparently Schleich make the body for this locomotive, and it is known in Germany as the Glücksschwein meaning the good luck pig.
It is not good luck if it is too big for the standard confines of a HO scale layout.
Please Märklin make it so it fits like any other locomotive on a layout.

What do you think?
You can answer the poll if you like.

I have two of these - not sure why, but I remember Miss 3 (at the time) wanting one, and then I bought another one 15 years later. Miss 18 and I were talking about modifying one of them to add red LEDs for eyes and a sound decoder of disturbing sounds. Miss 18 had only just moved out of the goth/anti-christ stage at that time. Pig wheels keep on turning. BigGrin ...

An original concept, but I admit not being interested for my layout.
but I understand that one might be interested.

then I won't say yes and I won't say no.

Thank you of sharing !

Is the pig a good luck symbol in Germany? Does pork fat rule? Poor people from the southern United States used to smoke the ears. Hog maws they are called. I think slaves were given the inards by the owners so they wasted nothing.Well washed intestines stewed with collard, mustard and turnip greens with salt pork are Chitlins. I don't see them in supermarkets since the last decade.
The elder generation that carried the tradition are mostly deceased. Same as the older local Italians who spit roasted whole lambs for Easter.
I would much rather eat a nice sauerbraten with celery root and ginger snap sauce, or even a roast pork or veal shank.

Well, the 30455 Lucky Pig was produced as a millennium item in 2000. I suspect it didn't sell as well as expected and there were a heap left over because sometime later Marklin produced the 30455-001 which was the same loco with all the butchers cuts marked on it.

I believe the base loco chassis is from the Alpha range.

Correct, Piggy, Alpha, and KLVM all had the single drive axle arrangement.

Hi Jimmy,
Your researches, knowledge and contributions are impeccable.
Thank you.
I find I am a little disappointed now that I chopped off the ears. But I had to do something otherwise it would not get a run.
Anyway there are retailers in Germany who still have stock for sale - at around 99.99 Euros.
Interesting that it shares basic with the old Alpha range and KLVM. What about the 3029 series? They seem to have different axle spacings.

Thankyou,
I believe sale of intestines (tripe, brains, liver etc) is outlawed in the European Union? Though for local kills and sharing with relatives/friends it is allowed. We can still buy this stuff at butchers here in Australia.
Denmark where one of my daughters lives is known as the pig/pork central. Maybe per head of population they have the most. I noted on the farms the animals are treated well.
I hope Märklin does the same with their pigs.🐽

You are quite welcome Cool I do try to do my bit.

As I recall the 3029 came in both 2-axle and 3-axle configurations

e. g.

UserPostedImage
there is a little nubbin just to the right of the drive gear (in this pic) which would be the tool location to drill the hole for 3rd axle.

UserPostedImage

and when they put the 3rd axle in they had to account for the gear on the one side, which I believe is why that particular lok has a slightly offset set of axles, although it also has only one drive axle.

p. s. The KLVM et al. frame has the gear mounted further "inboard" than the 3029

p. p. s. Now, why this frame was different from, say the 3000 which was already in production...I have no idea...(other than the 3000 driving all 3 axles (and thereby needing to have symmetrical axle alignment) (probably still only 1 axle with traction tires))...Confused

So.

I checked Noch and Viessmann, and it seems they only do cows, sheep, and chickens (why no piggies gruntling in happiness? he asks innocently LOL )...it may come to downloading a raft of Piggy sounds from somewhere on to a sound module. Addendum: Busch 5783 "On the Farm" does have piggy sounds, but only as 1 of 12 Farm/Tractor/animal Sounds...I suppose it could work...Blink

Perhaps another can find a module with sounds for our wonderful Good Luck!?!?

Pork fat rules 🤤 It's running quite fast. I thought it was a 3000, or a br 81, which aren't that fast.

I have randomly thought it might be the KLVM/ALPHA chassis and motor (only one drive axle and single drive bars) - as I recall KLVM can scoot right along!Love

The kids sure did like that on the layout! ThumpUp

The PIG shares the chassis with ALPHA, which is a slightly modified 3104 BR89 series chassis, and has a DCM motor.
The KLVM series like the 3087/3090, has a different chassis and a SFCM motor. (and is also different from the older 3029 series)

And it would have been fun to fit a pig with a sound decoder.... Cool

Hi Steve,
I wonder what the SPCA would think of Hamsters being used to clean the tracks in a model of the London Underground?
The solution where the model layout can't be seen and with no access to the tunnels for cleaning.

Now I'm really interested in a sound decoder for mine when it runs on the wheel, maybe with a button the audience (kids) can operate to make it squeel, or oink.

Simple Armando 😄, PIGS ! Pig iron to make iron horses, pigs of society, like some oil magnates, etc, and the exploiting type in gender condescending demeanor and ethnicity. So three different ones, so beware of the dogs about. Things may not be as they seem. Animals 1977. If you know, you know.
