Hi,
I’m just upgrading a small HO layout to be Mobile Station controlled. I have an MS2 60657 and a 60116 track box. Now I believe I need a 66360/66361 switched power pack?
I’m a bit confused. Does the 66360 just provide power to the mobile station, and therefore I still need the 66470 32VA transformer connected to the existing layout as currently set up for a Delta system? I think the answer is yes, but just want to be on the safe side.
Cheers,
David

No, you don't need nor would want to connect newer digital controllers to a regular transformer! Only switched mode power supplies. The wallwart power pack plugs into the track box, and the MS2 to the adjacent receptacle. Look at the online manual if you don't have a printed copy that came with them.

Hi David
You have 3 modules to digitalize your layout:
- 60657 the MS2 to allow you to control speed, select locos, etc
- 60116 the tack box is the amplifier / logic control (you may have 2 MS2s connected to it. It receives orders from the MS2 , transmits power to the MS2
- 66360 or 66361 is a 18 VDC, 36 W power supply feeding the two other modules from a mains wall plug

Now your question "I still need the 66470 32VA transformer connected to the existing layout as currently set up for a Delta system?" NO ABSOLUTELY NOT. The 60657, 60116 and 66360 replace ALL the previous Delta setup.

Why not? connection multiple systems to the same track (e.g.: DELTA and DIGITAL, DIGITAL and ANALOGUE) will result in short-circuiting the outputs. For a transformer it is not that bad but for digital modules, this may result in the immediate destruction of module(s)
Cheers
Jean

You can use the transformer to supply power to the 60116 trackbox - if you do so, do not connect anything else to that transformer.
But it is better to get a switched-mode power supply and maybe use the transformer for some accessories (lights in buildings or such).

Tom

Thanks for comments. My understanding then is to disconnect all red power cables to the track, just leaving brown and yellow cables connected from the old white transformer. Before connecting the switched mode power transformer.

I have to disagree with Tom (sorry) here is why:
- The needed power supply for the 60116 is a 18VDC switched power supply
- Using a transformer is possible but certainly NOT a 16 VAC one (because once a full wave rectifier is used, you would obtain a much higher voltage than 18 VDC) and of course not directly (you must have a full wave rectifier (4 diodes).
- Furthermore, the full wave rectified voltage would be different from a 66360 output.
- Last (no big deal) you need to have a jack plug.
Cheers
Jean

I surely wouldn't risk my MS2 connected to a track box which is connected to a conventional transformer in case of a short on the rails caused either by a train, or accessory that might harm it. Not to mention the newer on board Loco decoders.

Thanks. I found a video on u tube that pretty much explains the set up. I would only use the old transformer for yellow and brown. I have ordered a track connection box from local Marklin dealer
