I just got a lovely looking Zeppelin 3477 (will post pics later) that is controlled by less lovely Delta (4-pins) decoder. The train needs 40% to start moving and then goes quickly. It stops like hard power cut; no braking behavior.
Is there a way with modern Marklin (or PC RocRail) digital control to improve the driving/stopping characteristics using the current decoder. Yes, I can always put a new Mfx AC 60906 decoder in (or replace the entire insides with DC motor+decoder), but it seems more fun to try and tweak the original (if possible).
Thoughts? Experiences with 3477?

Hi Ben/All,

I converted this locomotive and added LED lighting see article below

Marklin 3477 conversion and LED lighting

I hope it provides ideas for your locomotive.

Thanks Ross. I added interior lights and peeps as you did, but not yet an AC motors decoder upgrade. The current Delta decoder seems sluggish compared to others I have.

Hi Ben, there is probably a good technical reason for this (could be as simple as load/drag or the difference between SFCM/LFCM/Drum), but some delta locos run much better than others.

If you are looking for a cheap yet effective upgrade you can use the decoder of your choice with the ESU DC magnet for the appropriate motor type, or the whole ESU kit which contains decoder, resistors, and the magnet all in one set. I think the set is like $40-45 and you are MFX with a top of the line decoder

I find the ESU Lokpilot 4/5 decoders to be so good you don't really need a 5 pole armature, and the ones Marklin ships in their motor kits have a plastic primary gear, replacing metal in the original. (which worries me for the very long term, perhaps unfounded but still)
