Good morning, I have a problem with this start set. I bought it at a 'real' auction and unfortunately I didn't go and see the item before bidding. One of the wheel flanges on a wheel is broken. Anyway, the loco is a BR 81 with a Delta decooder. I cleaned it all with WD-40 as it had been lubed with something called 'electrolube' which made it a bit stiff. Now all gears and wheels move much better. I tried to look for spare parts on Marklin's website page for the start set but it doesn't load. Does anybody know which item number the loco actually is so that I can try to find the spare wheel / axle ? I'm attaching the photo of the wheel just to show what some people can do :-( Now, I wonder which 'animal' managed to do this unless it was defective from 'birth'. Thank you Marco

Hi Dave, thank you for the diagram but my loco is Delta without the permanent magnet. Plus I haven't found the item number for the wheels in the part list. The ebay seller doesn't ship to UK and the wheels he proposes are not the correct ones. Sigh!

I'm sure they will come up with a replacement part number. Tell them you have looked at the parts list for the 30322 as well, but it doesn't list the part number for the wheels. Even though the parts list Dave linked to shows a permanent magnet on the motor, it also seems to show a Delta decoder. I suspect that loco is the same basic chassis as yours, judging by its catalogue number. It does seem strange they don't call out the wheels as a part.

Hi KiwiAlan, thank you for your input. I'll write Marklin although, if it works like last time I wrote them, I'll get a reply by 2023 😊

Hi bph, thank you for the links. The Dutch link is useful. the first one I already have and I got the spare number of the wheel but isn't available as far as I could search for on ebay.de or official Marklin repair shops. I wrote Marklin and now I wait to see what they come up with. Worst case scenario I'll have to find a wreck of a similar loco and get the wheel I need. Thank you Marco

While waiting for things to proceed I put down some tracks to see how the engine rolls and actually there is nothing of note in it running, I only pushed it as I've still got to reassemble the motor after cleaning it. Yes the loco doesn't wobble nor runs with a limp. So probably it isn't something that is going to make it impossible to run. Lets see what Marklin comes back with.

Marklin replied, they have no spares and nothing to use as an alternative so they can't be of any help. Didn't expect this from Marklin. Anyway the loco runs fine just the same. I'll browse the internet and dealers to see if they have any available somewhere 😊

I don't have the link handy, but the link has been given on this forum a number of times.

I was looking at the dutch website posted by BPH, and as my loco number is "81 010" I desume that the actual model number is a 3032.5, so a pre year 2000 model. I'll ask the Italian seller if he has an available wheel. Thank you

Damage like that is quite possible from being dropped, and not necessarily from a great height, just depends how it lands.
Could have happened any time unfortunately, even someone inspecting it at the auction - woops!
But of a pain though, and of course, as usual with many auctions, sold as-is, buyers risk.
Good luck finding the wheel. |

I have ordered a 60906 decoder to replace the Delta. Update when installed.

managed to find the wheel on the Italian ebay site. Should be here by next week. Now I have to find who can fix the locomotive. I can't possibly do it by myself as I wouldn't know how to 🙄

popped into my local train shop to ask if they had the means to re-assemble the axle and wheel and be willing to pay. They told me to buy a vice and do it myself, it would be quicker and easier. Really? I mean this is a shocker to me. They sell Hornby stuff and I was hooing they could do general maintenance. NOT!! A bit frustrated on where these hobby is headed towards, nothingness!!!!

Perhaps contact a model railway club in your area - they might know someone who could do it for you.

going to meeting with railway group next week. Apparently of the people I have asked on how/where can I get the wheel replaced everybody said 'Märklin? We wouldn't know how to do it, never seen a Marklin loco' So in the British isles nobody has ever had to replace a wheel on an Hornby locomotive? Hilarious!!!

If you can get the replacement wheel I should be able to fit it.

Hi Alan, back to these old posts. As I'm only an hour away from your location, tomorrow Jan 17th, I'm thinking of coming to collect the loco I sent in October to save you the hassle of posting it back to me. Please let me know, I can be there around 5:30, more or less.

I have to thank Alan for the nice job he did replacing the broken wheel with the new one. He has the tools and knows what he's doing. The loco is now on the roller test stand being run in. It is lovely to see it moving the connecting rods. Thank you Alan !!!

You are welcome. It is nice to use a proper wheel press to get the wheel on square.
