I am new to Z scale. I bought a starter set and E and T1 extension sets. I can’t figure out how to power the 72720 control box.

Thank, Carim.

What is the purpose of part 72090 that also comes with the extension sets?

72090 is a distribution strip which allows you to join together various wires like common returns such as all the yellow wires connected to points and signals etc. Because these plates can be screwed to the baseboard it enables a neat and methodical way to accommodate the wiring.
You could just as easily (and much cheaper) use terminal strip sometimes called chocolate strip to join wires in screw terminals.

I found using the terminal blocks to be quite awkward, requiring the connector plates to be bent closer to a right angle to allow the plugs to be plugged in to it.

Chocolate blocks are a better idea, but the cables supplied with the accessories is a bit delicate, so my preferred option would be something like this or this.

Wago make really good quality connectors, but they're much more expensive and would probably be over-kill for the low voltage of model railways!

Hope this helps..
