I have been away from the forums for a while and the last time I was on I was collecting Marklin ho. I have given the ho collection to my son and now I’m collecting and running Marklin z scale. It is nice to be back.

I’m sorry for the 150 year Marklin. It’s actually 140 year Marklin and the locomotive number is 41 220

Great.

Welcome back, with a new interest you will find a great deal of useful information about the z scale hobby right here. There have been many amazing improvements to this scale and a great variety of locomotive, rolling stock and scenery added. We have more options available, like never before. Enjoy.

Let us know of your progress or issues, there are many here, willing to lend a hand, or offer their advice.

Information about a certain loco usually starts with the model number, and when this is not known, it is a bit more difficult. I am not familiar with the 140 year logo you mention, could you describe it a bit more. There is a Model Railroad Wiki out on the web which allows for model search’s by using visual images, which might be helpful. It is free to join or to browse.

https://www.modelrailroadcollector.wiki/en-us/

Z scale models start with the number 8 and can be sorted by scale on this site.

Best wishes.

Dwight

Hello again. It is possible that is a special model loco which was part of a set #81780. It consisted of the following parts:

1 freight train locomotive with towing tender BR 41 of the DB (8827), 1 low-board wagon with tarpaulin Klms 440, 1 mineral oil tank wagon BP, 1 open freight wagon E 037, 1 beer wagon Warsteiner, 1 freight train companion wagon Pwg 012, 12 straight tracks, 12 curved tracks, 2 electromagnetic turnout swaying assistance, switchboard, distribution plate, cable, plug, etc.

That loco by itself is an 8827, in 1999 the set included the tender with this engine which was scripted with the logo mentioned. This is a three pole motor version, metal shell and frame, 4 drive wheels arrangement 2-8-2. A five pole version came out in the set in 2000.

Yours is a fairly limited production item.

Hope this helps.

PS. that boxed set has not been added to the Wiki yet.

Thank you for the information but the sets you mentioned still did not identify my Locomotive. I have a poster that Marklin sent me last year for 25 years of being an Insider Member. Maybe it’s on that poster. Thank you again for the information. I’ll continue searching. I will try Marklin.de and look at their product line to see if they could offer any information.

I went on the official Marklin Web site and asked the question about identifying the BR 41 Steam Locomotive and I noticed after I asked the question that information was only available on their site from 2000 - 2019. i believe this Locomotive was produced in 1999. I'm hoping someone at Marklin in Germany will be able to help me identify the Locomotive.

"41 220" only comes up as 8827 which was last produced in 1998. No other locos have this marking according to my source.

I contacted Marklin in Germany. They answered my request and asked me to send them a picture of my Locomotive. I sent it earlier today and their is a five to six hour time difference. I’m hoping to hear from them this evening or tomorrow. Thank you for your information. I’m going to post a picture of my Locomotive on this site.

I hate to break it to you but that's just an 8827 with a special imprint on the tender.

Same loco as in 81780. Identical. 2-8-2 shields 41 220 ......

Thank you for the info as I’m just looking for product details for the Locomotive. I’m sure you ‘re right about it being the 8827. I ‘ll just see if there was any thing other than the Logo under the product details. I’m glad to be back on this forum.

Hi. As I mentioned earlier, I found it in this loco in the set 81780.

Here is a link and photo of it in the set. The write up says it was only sold in the set in 1999. 140 years of Marklin would support this conclusion 1859 - 1999 but it might have been manufactured in 1998 or thereabouts.

https://www.lokmuseum.de...ahr=-1&bisbaujahr=-1

I don’t have the Koll’s or other reference for z scale but have found lokmuseum to be fairly accurate.

Sometime sets are broken up and sold separately, this might lead to some confusion about the individual pieces and their history.

Thanks everyone

Dwight

Hello You are welcome.

That is a great Locomotive, I bet it has great pulling power with that many drive wheels.

From 99, that is a three pole motor, but brushes are like still available. They look like 8989 or 89891, a very common part. That motor is probably not readily available, but you may want to see if you could locate a newer 5 pole. With everything going to the coreless motor, even this may take some time to locate.

Here is a link to the parts diagram. Careful, losing a part may take some time to replace.

That is my intention. I have a dealer who will try and locate a five pole motor.

The new Steam Locomotive 88275 has the new motor(Bell shaped Armature). I’m wondering if this Br 41 could be converted to the new motor.

211911 is the present 5 pole. Readily available at some dealers ...

Good question on the bell-shaped. I will order some and test when they arrive (Feb March I would imagine.

I’m waiting to hear from Marklin what year it was produced. The Locomotive runs smooth and it does have good pulling power. I’m seriously considering upgrading to a 5 pole or the Bell shaped Armature motor.

The photo was posted to Trainini Spur Z Facebook page where the foremost experts in Z reside.

They all said "81780 with special anniversary printing." I think Dwight nailed this further above

"Runs smooth and had good pulling power" ... Dont change the motor! "If it ain't broke don't fix it" comes into play here.
