Hey
Given the current hiatus, I decided open up my vintage train sets and found that my Marklin 3029 engine only works in reverse
How do I fix this ? I have two Marklin sets and tried both analog power boxes to reverse the engine so it starts moving forward but no luck
Please help

Hi Karthik, there are experts on this forum that will be able to also help you with this problem, but I will attempt to help you as I have had experience with this very problem. You however have to remove the body of the loco(screws underneath loco) to attempt to solve the problem. First check that the reverse relay is not stuck in one position by placing the loco on track and applying the reverse/forward pulse of the controller to the locomotive. The relay should energise on this power input. If not you could try freeing the mechanism using a small screwdriver. Be careful to not over stretch the little spring on the solenoid. Lets see how you progress with this remedy before we go on to other possible causes.I also look forward to comments and remedies from other forum members. Good luck and kind regards Jay

Jay, the 3029 has no screw on the bottom, all you do is extend the housing in the middle of the loco and you will be able to remove it.
your other advice is spot on unless there is wire loose

Hi Jay, thank you for your reply I managed to open as per river6109’s directions (thanks) -
Please help me identify the solenoid. In addition, I think someone has tried to repair this before and there is a paper stuck (I am assuming this is supposed be where the spring is hence it’s in reverse.)
Ps how can I send a picture to you over here in the forum 🤭

The spring on the relay is missing that is the reason of the problem

If you have a pen around that is one of those click types take it apart and try using the spring. Might work in a pinch. I’ve also used it to fix switches while waiting For parts.

Thank you Kostas, Joël and Jlopez I have attached another image with mark up line of where I think the spring has to be fixed. However, I this is the correct place because I can’t find the second hook where the spring should hook into on the loco

Till then I will need to find some small plastic part to fit there You only have two solutions really. Either you will have to glue something on to hold the other end of the spring, or replace the entire reverse unit. Possibly that small plastic hook got broken when refitting the body some previous time, in which case you might find the broken piece (tiny) and more importantly the spring in the box it was stored in? You could probably fashion something out of just about anything you might have lying around, or you nay even be able to look at opening the loop of the end of the spring to hook it onto the body of the reverse unit but that will be a bit fiddly and you'll need steady fingers and fine tweezers. Be careful not to stretch the spring. Oh, the other thing is you can at least manually reverse the unit so the Loco runs forward, but without the spring, the solenoid will tend to 'chatter' (vibrate and try to operate) |

Till then I will need to find some small plastic part to fit there What I would try and do is to drill a small hole, about 1mm (40 thou) or smaller diameter in the end wall of the reversing unit. Don't use a drill when doing this, hold the drill bit in a pin vice rotated between your fingers. with care it should be possible to drill a large enough for the loop of the spring to go through without damaging the solenoid winding. This would at least get you running again until you find a replacement reversing unit on eBay or the like.
