The BR44 has a mfx decoder but no sound. Can I retrofit sound to the factory decoder or i need a new decoder?

you can't produce sound or download a sound file into a non sound decoder, its either a decoder or a sound decoder, it has nothing to do with mfx

so the answer is you have to buy a sound decoder sometimes Märklin has divided the decoder from a sound module which can be added later., whether it is with this loco I don't know

What is the catalog No of the Loco???

Please if you can post a photo of the decoder.

Usually with Μärklin mfx decoders there are different versions for mSD and mLD

This I think is your case and if is an 21 pin decoder the only think that you have to do is to buy a 60975 decoder. The basic sounds for a steam loco are already installed. The installation is easy as far there is available space for th speaker and usually is in the tender.

If you want you can program or download specific sounds for your loco. Of course to do that you need the recorder programmer.

Which controller do you use??

The 39822 has an mLd decode 21 pin

You can use the 60975 decoder. There is enough space for the speaker
