I just finished modifying my 3021 V200 with NEM pockets and RTS couplers, so I can light coaches from the engine power. This lok has already been modified with a loksound decoder and a 5-pole high efficiency motor.

Here is what the coupler looked like before:

a little closer:

In order to get the NEM pocket (part #344890) to fit, I had to have the skirt milled out by 3/32 inch (2,4mm) so the coupler pocket would not be pushed down by the skirt:

And the completed job:

and closer:

The final product works great.

Great idea to power the light in the coaches from the locbiggrin How many coaches can you power? What is the limit of the decoder?

Hi Ron,

Those couplers look great, better than the original ones if I may say so.

Judging by the photo you probably used a professional mill to remove some material from the skirt didn't you?
Thanks for sharing the pictures with us.

Kind regards

Bo: No limit. The power comes though a relay in the lok that is activated by the decoder. It draws it's power from the track.

Guus: I am fortunate to have access to a professional tool and die machine shop that supports my business. The owner of the shop is also an MRR fan (and my wife's uncle).

Hello Ron,

Excellent work, I guess those current contacting Couplers from RTS
have all kinds of uses.

Martin: Yes, I love them. They are exactly what I was looking for in my quest, which went through Roco, Viessmann and a few really hairbrained homebrews.

Nice job Ron. Can be difficult sometimes depending on the Loco to get the wire from the coupler to the decoder. On some Locos it is easy on others the bogie gets in the way and there is little room to drill a hole through the floor of the Loco.

With the two pole couplers you dont need the extra drag on the coach wheels.

David
Take care I like Marklin and will defend the worlds greatest model rail manufacturer.

David: I really liked the Viessmann coupers. They had good contact and really smooth operation, however once converted, the lok or cars didn't couple with other Marklin stock. I was facing converting everyting, even goods wagons, to make it all compatible. When I found these, I felt that the addtional drag of the ground was worth the interoperability.

Ron, great work! Presently I am dealing with a quite similar problem: installing conductive couplers at my F7 to supply the lighting of my passenger coaches.

Where do you install the wires to the coupler at the motor truck ? At least at the F7 I didn't have the right idea yet.

Hans Martin:

In cases like this, I solder a thin wire (.08mm2) to the copper on the underside of the coupler and route the wire into the lok (or coach as the case may be). On coaches that are configured for the Marklin CC couplers, the RTS interface perfectly and no soldering is necessary.
