I’m thinking about purchasing a Gaugemaster HF-2 (high frequency electronic track cleaner) for my new märklin z scale layout. The layout will be controlled by two controllers and it has several block sections.

Will these block sections (controlled by a 72730 control box and 8940 signals) affect the electronic track cleaner in any way?
Regards
Erik

Hi Erik,

I don't think it should have a problem with the 72730 as I believe that they are just on/off swiches. I don't know about the signal though. What you may have to watch out for is the capacitors on feeder tracks and I am not sure what effect the device has on capacitors in the loco.s. Perhaps drop GM an email http://www.gaugemaster.com/contact.asp as they are also the main distributor for Marklin in the UK, so they should know.

Okay thank you, I think the signal might also act as an on/off switch, so it should hopefully work

I’ll drop an email about the capacitors and post the answer here in case anyone else has this question

Gaugemaster replied to my email and they wrote that the capacitor in the feeder track would turn off the track cleaner, and the capacitor in the locomotives will also turn off the track cleaner, but that will only happen when electrical contact is restored.
They also wrote that the 8940 semaphore might not be compatible with the track cleaner.

So the question remains if the HF-2 is compatible with block sections controlled by signals

I would also like to know what kind of power source I should get for it (the website tells me that the recommended power source is the gaugemaster M1 transformer, but the description of the M1 tells me that the M4 transformer is designed for z scale)
Regards
Erik
