Hi everyone, the sound just quit on a Märklin BR 50 locomotive of mine. It has a Loksound V3.5 mfx decoder with a 28 mm speaker. I reset the decoder and reloaded the sound files with Lokprogrammer with no luck. When I removed the speaker and tapped it while running it on the layout the sound would come back for a second or two but very scratchy and distorted. I assume the speaker went bad. When I looked online the ESU 28mm replacement speakers do not seem to be available. Do you think I can use any 28mm, 100 ohm .5 watt speaker?

Best regards,

Rich

AFAIK you need speakers with at least 50 ohms to protect the decoder.
Early Märklin mfx locos often lost sound by overloading the speaker. Later they added a resistor in series with the speaker. If you find a speaker with 50 ohms, maybe add a resistor too. The resistor will also protect the decoder in case the coil in the speaker melts and leads to a short circuit.

Tom

one (or 2) question. Does this look like a speaker that would have come with the ESU decoder?

To my untrained eye it looks like it could be the the factory speaker with the Loksound 3.0 Mfx decoder attached. But I could be wrong.

I've only searched for e couple of hours online, but it sure seems (in the U.S.A) that this speaker is no longer available. I saw a few listings in Australia and England. But not much luck here in country.

I wonder if I should bite the bullet and upgrade the decoder and speaker? But this is a lot more that $20-40.......Confused

There are two resistors in the decoder wiring but they are not connected to the speaker wires at all.

anybody have any recommendations or thoughts on a course of action to take?

These are chokes in the two wires leading to the motor.

The wiring looks as if it was not done by Märklin.

AFAIK ESU decoders usually come with a 23 mm speaker. I do not think this is the speaker that came with the decoder. I don't know whether this could be a speaker sold by ESU separately.

The 28 mm speaker with 100 ohms is sold out at ESU. Other speakers with 100 ohms are still available and they come with a fitting speaker capsule. I don't know how difficult it will be for you to get one of those speakers.

Vielen Dank Tom,

Some additional information. I knew this wasn't a factory installed decoder when I bought this Lokomotiv on ebay a year ago. It had the original decoder replaced with a ESU Mfx decoder by Eisenbahn Clinic here in the States. Sometime around 2007 or 2008 if I remember correctly.

I believe this verion of the decoder was introduced in 2006, correct? Then they came out with the Ver 4.0 in 2012?

I will keep looking online to see what I can find for a speaker replacement. If I can't find one I might be an excuse for an upgrade LOL

I want to thank Bart publicly for helping me an keeping the spirit of this forum alive and well. I could not find this speaker in the US, online, at some Märklin dealers, and a few other model eisenbahn contacts. He sent me the speaker from the Netherlands to South Dakota USA - I can not thank him enough for helping me.

Cheers to you and people like you Bart!

Besten Dank,

Rich

Here you go Bart, but there was a change of plans for the ESU V 3.5 Decoder in the BR50. I sent the locomotives to Scott at Helmuts hobbies and he replaced the ESU Decoder in the BR 50 with the newer version 4.0 and a speaker from an Apple iPhone. We then used the ESU decoder that was in the BR50 with the speaker you sent me and installed them in the BR 216 Diesel. And oh boy does she sound great!Love I hope the video clip gives a good impression. Thank you again Bart.....
