I've done all mine with smoke generators but I've put a bit of work into it. a.) drill out chimney, so long its a metal boiler, you may solder a wire onto the bottom connection and if analog to the red wire (follow the wire from the pick up shoe)

Drill a 5mm Diameter hole in 2 or 3 steps

You need to drill a small 1,5 - 2mm hole on the side of the cube that hold the body on the frame to pass through the wire, otherwise the wire will be stressed between the body and frame.





Then you can push from above a 7226 Marklin 5mm smoke generator and solder a wire as John told you.

My conversion is totally different because was conversion to digital with 60972 DECODER LED lights, 60963 5pole DC motor cabin light, tender light ww/red. So a photo will confuse you at all, Totally different.... 10 wires from the decoder!!!

I have to notice some things for your case witch is analog operation:

1. The body is metal-the smoke gen in your photo is for plastic bodies
2. Drill a 5mm hole
3. Use a 7226 or No 10 smoke generator
4. Solder a wire to the pin on the bottom of the smoke generator and pass it throught the small 2mm hole in the inside of the body.



4a. Good insulation between the bottom of the 7226 and the loco frame. - Space is just to tight....
5 Connect this wire with the main soldering point who is on the left side of the brushplate of the motor here two black wires are already soldered
6. The earth is coming trough the loco body and frame


By the way change the pick-up shoe. With something like this you can not go far

You are absolutely right.

That is the small 2mm hole and that is the main solder point.

If you anyway want to use the 2 cable smoke generator you have to connect the black to the main solder point and the yellow in a point that is connected to the frame (ground). I am not sure about the colors of the wires on the generator but look on the manual.

I purchased a full set of drill bits and ended up using 4 of them to gradually drill up to 5mm. Even at 5mm, the seuth no.10 took a bit of convincing to get in!

sometimes it does this just to clear the tube, its like us clearing our throat with a cough,
I used a insulated piece of copper and glued it on top of the block (last photo previous post)
and than instead of drilling a hole I've shaved off a curb in the middle so the wire can get through
