A friend has asked me to try to do the latest upgrade for CS2 through the internet as he was having problems. He wasn't to sure whether his internet connection was in good working order as he couldn't even get onto this forum.

I plugged it into the modem, clicked upgrade internet and got this message:-

/usr/bin/dbclient:exited:Error resolving: Temporary failure in name resolution
rsync:connection unexpectedly closed (0 bytes received so far) [receiver]
rsync error:error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(453)[receiver=2.6.9]

What I understand is that it is refusing to download the latest upgrade.

Why? Well it can't be with the internet connection (mine works perfectly)

Could it be that something is 'gummed' up in the CS2?

The controller works fine, it registers and runs locos.

Just won't upgrade.

The only solutions I can think of is to reset to factory conditions, thereby loosing all registered locos and any other info and then trying to upgrade hoping it would work

Or trying with a 'stick', but if you can't upgrade with internet connection, I'm confident the stick won't work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No, this is just a basic "unable to FIND a PATH to an update to be downloaded."

While the update server may occasionally be unavailable ..
.I would check that it is not YOUR end and either the CS itself or your local router is not able to do DNS resolution.

please ensure
- you do have Your dhcp ENABLE so that a gateway path can be found,
- (or ensure it is FULLY set up manually)
- your router is functioning properly (i.e. that it can find/use a DNS)

There's your problem. As Clapcott says, you have a DNS or name resolution issue - website names cannot be resolved to tcpip addresses.

Your router should be pointing to at least 2 external DNS servers, hopefully your ISP should specify some, if not you can use Google's public DNS servers on 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
