Last month, dealers received the ModelsWorld/LS Models (MW)1608 IC "Bavaria" set. The photos of the actual set showed that the SBB Am Eurofima coaches and the Bm RIC coach have roofs that are painted silver. This does not correspond to my recollection and I posted about it in the HO scale forum and also in German at Drehscheibe-Online, a topic that received over 100 comments.

I have been perusing my books, postcards and photos to try to either justify my belief that the roofs were grey or to confirm that L.S. Models rendering is in fact prototypical.

Here is what I have learned. I cannot conclusively prove that the coaches were either delivered with a silver or grey roof. I guess that this needs to be filed in the same cold case folder as the issue of whether the C1 coaches had a white or off-white (light grey) stripe. I have been in contact with people, ranging from a locomotive driver to a representative from SBB Historic and have not come up with any definitive information.

Here is what I believe. I do not think that these coaches had a silver roof. According to the information that I gathered, the last SBB rolling stock to receive silver coloured paint on the roofs were the 1975 WLAm coaches (T2S) and the 1979 Bcm couchette coaches (Eurofima design) which were painted to match the T2S coaches.

I learned that there was no standard colour used for the painting of coaches. There were slight variations between colours used at the manufacturer and at the various SBB shops where the coaches were maintained.

Looking at the models, this is what the LSM/MW SBB Am looks like:

Here is what the LSM 47300 model looks like:

Based on the photos, which, as I said, are not conclusive as to whether the roofs are silver or grey, I have come to the following conclusions:
1) The roofs on the Eurofima Am coaches were painted in a more metallic colour than the restaurant (WRm) and open seating (Bpm) cars.
- This resulted in the roofs being more shiny when photographed and yielded the appearance that they were silver.
2) When ACME released the sets (for Uli Reyer/Reisezugwagen.eu) of the EC Hermann Hesse (Stuttgart-Naples), I felt that the shade of grey was too light compared to my interpretation of the C1 colours. The roof and skirt colour did not match my other Eurofima coaches from Roco, Maerklin and other brands. I now believe that given the options to render the more metallic shade, that ACME opted for this lighter colour for these models and that this rendering is reasonably accurate.

3) Given that these coaches were frequently inserted into a consist right behind the locomotive, the coach roofs would have received more carbon residue from the pantographs and furthermore, as these coaches were used on diesel routes into Germany, notably to Munich, that the roof would also have been exposed to residue from the diesel locomotives in front of it. The fact that the part of the roof with grooves was more weathered, this also made the extremities look lighter.
All of this would contribute to making the roof of these coaches appear different than other coaches inserted in other parts of the same consists, in addition to any slight differences which might have existed at delivery.

I think that it is difficult to reproduce the exact colour and that this might lead to slight variations in the appearance of models, none of which are truely prototypical for this reason.

I do think that the consist looks better when the colours are uniform.

If anybody has any photos or links of Eurofima coaches in the original C1 orange livery, please post the photos or links.

Also curious as to whether the correct term would be roofs or rooves? ;)

Thanks and best regards for a happy and healthy New Year
