Hello everyone,
I have a question, is it possible to run a DC locomotive on the Marklin system with the pantograph connected to the catenary?
I mean, if I have a DC electric locomotive, if I raise the pantograph and make it work on Marklin tracks with Marklin catenary it will works or I'll have to convert it to AC operations with the "slide"?

Thanks. If you connect a 12V DC regulator between ground and catenary, and if you select the pantograph on the loco, it will be OK. This is what I have done here: Take care not feeding the loco with AC. The other problem with lots of DC locomotives is the wheels spacing not narrow enough for some turnouts... Best Regards Joël |

Any suggestion/guide instead for what concern a full conversion of a digital DC locomotive to AC?

Thanks For sure there must be some recent topics here talking about that. Well, I have converted some, long ago, successfully on some old analog Jouef or Fleischmann, The motor needed to be insulated from ground to put a decoder, this will be already the case if the loco is digital. Then replace the decoder if it is not compatible with Märklin. You have to select a decoder that is Märklin compatible, and for DC motors. And the big trouble, for me, was to adjust the wheels spacing on some models:  Sometimes it's easy, sometimes it's ok, sometimes it's impossible, then the loco behaviour on turnouts will depend on your layout shape and tracks. For some models, i.e. Piko or Roco, maybe you can find replacement wheels. Best Regards Joël |

Leitner,
what model do you want to run on Maerklin? Which company? It also matters if you are using M, K or C Track. DC rolling stock works much better on K or C than on M track.
As some of the other members mentioned, the wheel spacing can cause issues with some switch tracks. One you provide the make and model of the locomotive, I can give you a better idea of what it would take to convert it and whether there may already be an AC version out there.

Hello, Thanks for your answers! @Mike, the locomotive I want to convert is: http://www.piko-shop.de/...=artikel&vw_id=18870No AC version, only DC, the locomotive is PIKO and my tracks are C-gleis, in my layout there are not too many switches so I think should not be a big issue. Thanks! |
