I have been having some trouble coupling some of my earlier couplings together. Yesterday I just realized i must have some time ago, lowered the couplings on a lot of my older carriages so they would couple with the latest close couplers. This has now been the cause of my problem because quite a few of the older ones have not been adjusted, and hence they wont couple with the close coupler.
Has any one else found this problem and if so, what is their solution.

Yep. I got rid of the Relex coupler wherever this was possible.
When mixing Relex and Close Coupler I make sure the loop from the Close Coupler goes into the Relex coupler.

Hi Tom. I guess that means lowering the relex to suit the close couplers and nipping off a bit of the uncoupling stem. Probably also means I will have to have certain wagons with one end left alone so it couples with the standard hook on the wee locos like the 3000, 3080 3078 etc.

I lift the car with the close coupler a little bit when needed to make sure the loop goes over the hook of the Relex coupler.
I do not nip anything off nor do I bend anything.

This does not work for shunting operations with uncoupler tracks or Telex couplers.

I noticed that the old relex coupler loop tip slants slightly upward (left), probably to make coupling easier. However, this often results in uncoupling with newer close coupler. I have only one close coupler loc, and it cannot be replaced as it is digital uncoupler.
I bend the relex metal loop tip downward (right) so it remains better seated in the close coupler when traveling over M track. I only did so for the lead wagon.
What other close coupler solutions do people have for use with vintage rolling stock?
Ben

Btw, bending the whole relex coupler down requires grinding down the pin, which otherwise shorts on switches. I am trying a combination of this and loop bend, which decent success.

Hi

Like Tom, my conclusion is that the close coupling are not completely compatible with the relex coupling.
This means no smooth coupling and uncoupling and no Telex operation with the other (new Telex with Relex or old Telex with KK)
The idea is to always have the KK buckle to lock with the Relex pin and NOT the other way around.

The trouble is, often, the KK buckle is too low and bumps on the Relex buffer (normally vertical). One trick to bend SLIGHTLY the appendix on the KK buckle so that it does not go as low.
It works but no smooth coupling.

Cheers
Jean

I agree with the above comments; There is no easy and general fix for this problem.
KK+Relex should always be coupled manually, and it should be inspected in order to make sure that it is indeed the KK-loop that goes over the Relex hook. -and never the opposite.
Yes, the "manual five-coupler" is needed every time...

My solution to the problem? I got rid of all the close couplers. Flapper
I hate them.Razz
