Hi all:

When digging trough our neighbours garage sale yesterday I couldn't believe my eyes: a muddy and desolate but complete V200.027 Diesel (#3021.9) from 1965 for $5 - what a deal biggrinbiggrinbiggrin
Back home after field stripping it became evident she was in desperate need for a loooong hot shower and some solid brushing - the mud inside was almost 1" thick !!!
Eight hours, half a can of Ballistol and one set of new brushes plus schleifer later she runs well in analog mode. And roughly as usual with MS since that Delta decoder one of her former owners had installed is nothing to ride home about. But what the heck - after all, it's a kids toy. And that decoder even had survived years of mud and water plus the shower ... biggrin
Though worn and rattling and missing 30% of her original colors she'll make a nice pusher for my Grandkids' old F7 SANTA FE Diesel Dummy Smile

Hi John,

Great deal, why not repaint the V200 in Santa Fe Warbonnet livery ? This would be a unique variant of this model. There are many railroads who have bought old DB V200 and repainted them with their colors. Perhaps also the ATSF is amonngst them, who knows ? biggrin

I have an old S3/6 with LFCM motor which I have converted to Delta (relay was defective). I only use it in analog mode where it is a really good runner. However, on my digital layout, the noise is simply awful. Sounds Like a lawn mower with two-cycle-motor.

Hi Hans Martin,

your idea is nice, many thanks Smile ... Thinking twice I'd say I'll leave her just as she is - too much effort for a toy which will be treated and played the hard way ... After all - she IS red & silver, already. Somehow ... [xx(]
And not to forget those 8 hours of work [}:)] I did invest already to make her run again ...

Lawn mower - excellent comparison, hahaha biggrin

Best Regards,
John

Hmmm..when I lived in Germany, I got a few great buys at flea markets. I'll have to see if there are any while I'm over there this year. December is not a normal time for them, though.

Oh, I'm not laughing, John. My wife drags me to yard sales/garage sales almost every weekend, but I never see anything Marklin or even MRR around here. I would not be reluctant to buy it if I find it, though.

In Germany mrr flea markets are quite frequent.

Here in Darmstadt there are 3 or 4 each year, only for mrr and tin-plate toys. And if you like to travel around you can visit a market almost each weekend.

But a 3021 for $5 ? I can't remember that I've ever seen this (otherwise I had one). Rather, prices are like ebay.

Hans Martin: Wait a minute - speaking wise words you delivered an completely new, radical idea ... just couldn't put my finger on it the very first time reading it. Let's collect the facts:

1) She's long, already ... Smile
2) She's heavy, already ... Smile
3) She got an silver roof, already ... Smile
4) She sounds like a GG-1 (almost biggrin)
5) But she's missing her pantographs ...
6) And - after all - she's missing badly that beautyful "GATOR-GREEN" hue ...

Conclusio: She'll be an ELECTRIC in the future, living a new live as E200.001 [:p][:p][:p] on our Grandkids' carpet layout !!!
And all we need is a bit of color plus 2 nice chrome pantos - no cash involved. Project E200 will be launched by next week ...

Nice work, John, but the "purist" in me is screaming FOUL! Smile

You did a beautiful job on the paint work. How does she run?

Ron, no need for screaming, look at it that way: You were right - IF she were collectible in ANY sense. Being also a purist I'd NEVER do such f.e. with that most beautyful analog E94 (#3022 from 1980) I was lucky to get a few weeks ago - this one will stay strictly in her original state, forever [^]

Enter that V200. There was definitely NOTHING left worth any preservation - a pile of scratched metal, drowned in water, filled with mud and almost beaten to death by countless former owners. Were it not for my Grandson ... Smile

Well, this was a fast, low-budget buildup - $20 including the loco! Now please tell me, Ron - what do you get at the toy store for the very same twenty bucks ??? - some truck made of cheap plastic which is broken the day after tomorrow.
Before "restoration" she was pure junk - now she's a smooth runner. And a simple, sturdy TOY I'm sure our Grankids will have lots of fun with biggrin

John, it was a good acquisition for you, no argument. It is better for the poor lok than the trahscan, certainly. It seems to have found a good, loving home.

Hi John,

Sorry, couldn't follow this thread for some time, have been on sea in the last two weeks.

I think your special painting is excellent. Have seen a few V200 with different color sceems, owned by private railraod companies. And yours is the finest one. Obviously your grandson is supposed to transport precious State Bank property with this lok.

The catenary on the diesel lok is absolutely justified at the current oil price level.
