Hello,

Since the subject of my favorite nearby National Park has come up, I thought I'd add some historical, as well as present day commentary.

  • The town of Harper's Ferry is at the confluence of the Potomac (entering from the left) and Shenandoah (entering from the bottom) rivers. The states of Maryland, Virginia and West Virgina all meet at this point. The lower part of the town of Harper's Ferry, West Virginia is a historical site maintained by the US Park service, as it looked in the mid 1800's. The town was the location of a Federal arsenal. This is where the infamous John Brown tried to start his rebellion/slave uprising. Col. Robert E. Lee then of the US Army, commanded the troops that responded. They trapped Brown and his band in the fire house of the arsenal (small building, lower left part of the image, set a side from the others). Even though this incident happened a number of years prior to its start, many historians consider it to be the opening of the US Civil War. BTW, the arsenal was burned by Union troops at the beginning of the war, to keep it from falling into Confederate hands.
  • On the far side of the Potomac River, the trail along the shore is the Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Canal towpath (also a National Park). It runs from Washington DC, to Cumberland, Maryland (~184 miles/295 km). Today it is is a favorite hiking, biking and camping destination. Sadly only a few short sections are maintained with working locks and water.
  • On July 4th, 1830 two companies were founded in Baltimore, Maryland. The C&O Canal Co. (trying to imitate the success of the Erie Canal in New York) and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (first railroad in the U.S.) Both intended to connect the Ohio River valley to the eastern seaboard of the US via the port of Baltimore. The B&O reached Cumberland decades before the canal. The B&O also made it all the way across the Appalachian mountains to the Ohio River. The canal gave up when they finally reached Cumberland. The canal operated until the 1920's when a hurricane finally shut it down. Many sections of the B&O are still used by CSX today, this line included.
  • The nearer of the two bridges has a pedestrian platform. It can be used to cross back and forth from the town, to the Maryland shore. Today the platform is inclosed in a chain link cage. When I was growing up, it was not. One used to be able to walk through the tunnel to the other side of the cliff. I don't know if that is still possible. It's quite interesting when a train comes and one is on the bridge or in the tunnel.
  • This is one of my favorite train spotting locations in this area. The line going west (bridge with the the train) still gets a lot of traffic. Though one will never see an Accela on this line, there is a lot of freight traffic as well as commuter trains in and out of DC that are run by the state of Maryland. I don't know if Amtrak still has any trans that use this line.

Harper's Ferry is beautiful place. I have been there several times and have parked in that station parking lot too. If you are ever in the Washington DC

"Praias do Sado: An interesting prototypical cluster in the hinterland of the Setubal port area in Portugal, ca. 50 km south of Lisbon.

A wye housing a passenger station for through traffic (almost adjacent to a single track passenger terminal on the same line - like on a MRR layout); nowadays only served by suburban trains, the station saw intercity trains in the past.

Radiating from the wye are various industry spurs and a small freight marshalling yard. All tracks are under wire and are served by both, electric and diesel locos.

One probably finds older photos on Google maps and Bing maps.

It also looks like they were constrained on where the track could go without doing a major change to the catenary. They middle track seems to have the catenary attached to the outside of the masts holding the catenary for the right hand track. Probably cheaper to do that than make a nice single curve ...

In the Portuguese National Railway Museum in Entroncamento is a HO scale diorama depicting the suspension of the railway line under the 25th of April bridge in Lisbon which models exactly the prototype location I presented earlier.

Rollins Pass, also known as Corona Pass, elevation 11,676 ft (3,559 m), is a mountain pass in the Rocky Mountains located on the continental divide in Colorado in the United States. The railroad line was abandoned after the opening of the Moffat tunnel in 1928.

Now, what do we have here? German prototype, modern double-track (secondary) mainline not under wire - the Upper Ruhr Valley Railway:

A turnout in front of the tunnel, a road bridge just on top of the tunnel portal, and a station entry signal potentially stopping a train in the tunnel.

You mean it is one of those mechanically actuated crossings? It sure looks like the track on the far side of the road is up in the air, waiting for the train to push it down and actuate the barrier arms Scared Scared Scared Scared Scared

Like the 7390? I understand your reasoning, but actually I meant the “Halbschranke” 7292/74920/74922/74923(or 78070/78071) in HO scale (with expansion set 74930/7593) or 8992 in Z-scale

Yes, certified prototypically correct. You could even add a road bridge and a signal.

I have also seen pairs of switches near tunnel entrances on Youtube on the line between Innsbruck and Brenner. I have modeled this on my layout.

East 51st Street crosses under US Rt 64 in Tulsa Oklahoma. We have a gated level grade crossing diagonally across a divided highway, with a highway overpass above!

Update: This is the Union Pacific "Tulsa Yard", if you look at the satellite view you can see there are a few more now abandoned spurs. At 5300 S 108 E Ave in Tulsa, OK there is a small UP office for managing this area.

What I think is going on is that the corridor connections between the cars in the early ICE units were just as big a pain as Marklin's conductive couplers used on 8871 - so they just can't be bothered to make up a longer trains! BigGrin LOL

Now that level of realism I could have done without. Cursing

Actually it might be Rocoline or Fleischmann, as this British DCC modeller has varied DCC models, including lots of Trix which he obviously loves, and a very nice station which if you could see it without the trains on, might look very similar. He makes a lot of videos other forum members will be interested in, explore his youtube channel ThumpUp
