Hello all,

What's the minimum bridge clearance that will allow a train to pass underneath, assuming no catenary is used (say all steam and diesel locs)?

I realize this will vary by track (C, M, K). With K, I have always used the approximation of about 3 inches (76.2mm) from the ground to the bottom of the bridge. So, what fits in this space is the track plus the loco/stock height-wise. I don't think I could get away with too much else. I could measure all my locs/stock, but I'm interested in a somewhat universal number in case I get something new later that's a bit bigger for some reason. I am most interested in C or M track, as I will probably use one of these for a simple play layout, maybe even a retro layout!

I am working to design a somewhat simple super compact layout for the kids to play with that is a bit easier to reach all the parts than mine. I'm still interested in having some dimension. Thanks in advance for any help. It may not be possible, but I am considering at the moment building it on a hollow core door, which I can get cheaply at the hardware store. The largest are about 36x80 inches (91.4x203.2 cm)

Hi Brandon - i have 65mm clearance (one area only 60mm!): measured from the top of C track rail to bottom of bridge supports - a bit tight, i know, way less than M recommends!! But it works for all my rolling stock, and Steam n Diesel locos. They all pass easily.......

Hi,

These are the clearances recommended by Marklin

M-Track/C-Track= 74.5mm for Steam and Diesel Locos 80.5mm for E-Locos Pantos lowered 104.5mm for E-Locos with Catanery

K-Track = 68.5mm " 74.5mm " 98.5mm "

all measured from bottom of the Track

Clear heights for M and K track have appeared in others too, but see here from the 1988-89 ENG catalog ... (see uploaded high rez scan too, for printing on A3 [or 11"x17"] format ^^) :
