Hi, I have a Marklin ICE train #29785. I want to upgrade the motor to a high efficient one. How do I know what type of motor is in my loc. A drum communicator or a flat communicator one? Does anybody know? Thanks Abe |

Hi Abe,
I have the same problem as yourself, in that I am not familiar with the Marklin nomenclature for loco motors. So when I want to upgrade something, I just write an email to Marklin service, and I always get a reply within 48 hours. Service.at.maerklin.de
So it goes like this example reply:
"Dear Mr. Thurlow,
60941 is the right motor set for this model. 60962 or 60942 will be also the right decoder for it. We haven't tested it yet but it seems to be possible also to built in 60965 (sound).
Sincerely yours,

Hi,
For the model 3313 (1-C-1), please advise what motor conversion set and decoder I would need.
I might also prefer it for sound.
regards .......... "

Hi! Originally Posted by: acwertheim How do I know what type of motor is in my loc. A drum communicator or a flat communicator one? Just check the spare parts list or service manual for the type of brushes you need or look at the motor (drum collector: two brushes (coal) in one line on opposite sites; flat collector: two brushes (copper and coal) side by side). If flat collector, then the question will be large or small. This can be determined by the prototype class (ask the forum or ask Märklin). Several models have been changed from flat collector to drum collector. Therefore for some models, "look at the brushes" is the only possible answer. Sometimes the Delta ICE versions already have the five-pole DC motor and don't need new motor parts. No explosion diagram for 29785 online, so I cannot check. |

Hi All who answered me. Thank you guys. It is a drum motor. I checked the brushes and they are on opposite sides. (like Tom , who seemed to know everything, said) Thanks again. Abe |

I found a picture of the 29785 on Stummi's Forum. It has the standard AC/DC motor with field coil.
No, I don't know everything. Does it switch between two pickup shoes to get power always from the leading shoe? When you upgrade the motor then you will need a new decoder. Switching between pickup shoes requires extra electronics. |
