Hello Marklin friends,

Well on a rainy day like today I decided to take out some 00 locomotives and get them running around the track. Main locomotive which I got running is a red SK 800 locomotive...I don't know that much about it other than the fact that it's a "special order" kind of train from the pre-war years. Anyone have more info on it? I could not find it in my Koll's although it might be in a special edition Koll's

...

Interior has all pre-war parts. Had to replace one gear that was very heavily worn in the engine housing and re-align the wheels because the linkage was snagging. Replaced one light bulb and it was back to running again!

...

Best regards,

Paul

Nice loco. Saw it too on eBay.com and hoped no one else would... Well you can always hope

Paul, there is some pictures of another original VK red SK on a German forum on page 2:
http://alte-modellbahnen...Sk-Replika-ist-da-1.html

It's just a little bit different, a later model, with the missing seventh splint just below the smoke deflectors.

I don't know much about this version and there is not much info on the internet. Maybe it's some sort of a "Sonderserie" but unofficial. There is also a red SLR 700 but it's from 1938 and this SK 800 is from around 1940.

In this condition it clearly is a "Riesenrarität" as you would say in German. Congratulations with the find

Regards,
Thor

Neil -- the red SK was pulling 3x 340 series cars pretty well and could handle at most 2x 350 series cars. Strangely it ran much better in reverse! I'll have to check into that...It was slipping out a lot because there was some oil on the wheels from when I was fixing the gears. The black SK could pull 4x 350 series cars easily...it has a replica frame and wheels from RITTER which I must say are very nice. When I got that SK it was just the housing and I built it from spare parts!

Thor -- thanks for the additional info....if that other red SK is original, they might have been doing the "special order" for a few years.

Best regards,

Paul

Hi Geoff,

I believe they are available through TTN or Ritter but they have found a modern source and they look a little different. I have a baggie full of originals that I've collected over the years -- probably half of them are burned out.

Yes, that's the one. No need to talk about money here though. It was a good investment...

Sorry, maybe I didn't say that correctly. We can always talk about prices...if you really want to know how much it's worth. What I paid for it is a different story BigGrin

Yes, I didn't have a reference price either...I figured it was worth at least just a little more than a green one...Now after talking to some dealers and auctioneers I realize it is quite rare. I think it will be in my collection for a long time.

You have models of streamlined locomotives produced within the short time their proto-types wore their streamline plating. Rare indeed!

Hi all,

This is the Portuguese SK, made by VACMINEL

(snip)

Regards,

This is really interesting, I see it was discussed similarly here a few years back....

https://www.marklin-user....aspx?g=posts&t=5539 and this link...

http://tischbahn.de/inde...tugal-hergestellt-wurde/ (which is possibly drawn from this link.....)

http://www.frtrains.com/...ntation/vacminelp1.shtml

The items of course are interesting in their own right, but what really fascinates me is that this Portuguese Gentleman was able to manufacture products of very high quality in his own workshop, in his spare time!! - the articles refer to Bronze moulds which were later destroyed, but I'm finding myself wondering what would have been the techniques required (and possible at that time) to actually manufacture the Loco parts and the Coaches, not to mention the Track and Trafo.

My initial thought was that the track is actual Marklin track, and that the coaches were standard Marklin production items repainted by him, but perhaps he made them from scratch. So not only did he have the ability to cast the Loco body and Tender (did he also make the engine, wheels, motor etc or did he use Marklin chassis as his basis?), but also the Tin-plate fabrication for the coaches and trucks, but also able to source of produce a Trafo.

Perhaps this is covered in the original non-English articles and the auto-translation has let me down?

Because this is really a diversion from Paul's original topic, I'll start a new thread which might catch some new viewers and stop us stomping all over Paul's thread.

Awaiting more input.

Cheers

Thanks for the info, Cookee. It's certainly related to my red SK as there might be other ones in blue, gray, etc. I'm very interested in the VACIMEL trains too...see you in the other thread!

I am very glad to see that one. I didn't know them. But did Portugal ever have those engines on the rail network?
