Hello Guy's

I am going through ideas for a vintage H0 layout and wondered how many lighting accessories i can run from a single 280A super transformer ( Station lamps / lamposts / via the yellow lighting circuit output terminal ?

Many regards Neil.

Hi, Neil,

Modern rule of thumb says 1.5 VA per light bulb. That would be 20 light bulbs from a 30 VA transformer (no power left for anything else).
Don't know if those vintage bulbs need more power.
Regards
Tom

I always thought it was 1.0va per bulb. There, you have another 10 bulbs from your 30va transformer, just like that!

Hi Neil,

The larger type of bulbs, which is used for the lamps you show are specified with a consumption of 1.25 VA. Smaller bulbs like the headlights of locos or the bulbs in Signals of the 704X-Series are specified with 0.9 VA consumption.

All 280A transformers should be checked before use today. Often the insulation of the cable (high-voltage-side) has disintegrated inside the transformer.

Regards

Markus

Hi Markus, yes good point on the transformer lead, i always replace the high voltage " MAINS INPUT " cable on old transormers before use and test them on a bench tester for output voltage !

So i should be able to use quite a few bulbs before they start dimming down then !

Has anyone tried using the new low power consumption LEDS which are available with many different socket sizes nowadays ?

Thanks Neil.
