Hello When did M change the stamp on their trains from Made in Germany to Made in West Germany and Back? Just curious.  |

After the fall of the Wall in November of 1989 and the official German reunification on October 3rd 1990, all companies instantly used 'Made in Germany' again. The exact proceedings had been formed into a law by the West German Government some time before. Therefore a product marked 'Made in West Germany' or 'Made in German Democratic Republic' has been produced between 1950 and 1990.  Hope this helps! By the way the station that I have on my layout was made by Kibri in West Germany!! |

Just an addition here... (sorry for posting a new message, my mistake [B)]) Also, between 1950 and 1990 products marked "Made in West Germany" were banned in communist countries. Instead they were using the company logo for exporting into those countries. Most probably that stands for Marklin products as well, if of course were imported into the German Democratic Republic. Anybody knows that? |

Don't know. I don't recall ever seeing anything marked that way even when we lived in Germany and we went to flea markets. I do have a camera marked "Made in Occupied Japan", though. |

Some googling resulted in this quote:
"Markings such as "Occupied Germany" are useful for
dating an item. Germany was occupied from 1945-1949,
after which it was split into East and West Germany."
So it seems like Underworld is right about the production year

I have some 1960s wagons that are just marked made in Germany.. So the use of the West Germany marking was not consistent.. |

Anybody knows that? Most model railroaders in the DDR were using the TT scale (1:120), because they were manufactured in their home country. H0 items were hard to find. Still there are of course a lot of TT fans in Germany, and especially in the former DDR part. TT is actually an ideal size for a model railroad. You can make a small layout on the kitchen table - but still have more details than N or Z. The size is also suitable for decoders, but for obvious reasons the TT scale has been "cold" in the west too long to recover. |
