I Wonder if someone can shed some light on a problem I have with with a BR52 condenser tender. I recently converted this loco to have sound with all the bells & whistles. I have used a Loksound M4 decoder. To operate the three fans on the tender I have hooked up a FRT2-S DC12v relay to switch the fans on via Aux 2. This works really good when using a central station or mobile station. Fans turn at a moderate speed taking is power directly from the track. Now comes the issue, when this same loco is placed on the track with a an Ecos 2 all other functions operate just dandy except for the fan. It stutters & tries to turn but will not spin. Is it because the relay is 12V or is there too much track power or too little or is there a setting on the Ecos 2 that I have not ticked correctly? The track runs in Motorola mode & all but this loco has no problems. Can I maybe discard the relay & let the Aux 2 outlet drive the motor or will that exceed its output limit. I am open to all suggestions.

Hi Dave,
Is your transformer set to the 21 volt setting. Refer to page 11 of your Ecos manual.

Cheers,
Brian.

Brian, I am giving the owner of the Ecos 2 a call now & let him check this this setting. Thanks.

With the original decoder, the fans are connected to the decoder output. So they are fed with rectified current. I presume a DC motor is used for the fans.

Now you feed them with a relay. Do they get rectified current (from the decoder) or unrectified current (directly from the track)?

A DC motor connected to the track power will do three steps forward and one step back with a Märklin controller and two steps forward and two steps back with an ECoS (using default settings).

Brian, turning voltage 14V or 21V makes no difference.

Tom, many thanks for your reply. Yes the relay allows direct power from the track (unrectified current). So if I remove the relay & use the Aux 2 output to power the motor we should solve the problem then? I believe the motor is DC.

I think so - unless the motor draws too much current for AUX 2 (in this case the overload protection of the decoder should keep the blue smoke in the decoder).

This would allow you to set AUX 2 to "Smoke" so the fans will run faster while the loco is driving. You can use AUX 2 to adjust the speed if it's too fast.

That's what I would try.

Tom, I think the decoder would have too much load on the Aux 2 output running that motor. I will have to think of something else. Cannot afford to loose that MFX decoder. I rather play it safe. Any other suggestions on this one?
