I have two of these 18va transformers and just wish to confirm it is OK to cut the plug off that goes into a 24088 and use the transformer for accessories such as lights, signals or turnouts on a small practice layout?

Hi Sean,

yes (of course) you can.

Only my personal suggestion: buy the suitable socket for the original M* plug (it is a standard electronical component you can easily find in the electronics shops): you can later eventually sell or use it again with the 24088 track.

Bye

Thank you for the confirmation. I'm just setting up a desktop layout to find out how to automate a layout using a PC to control everything including accessories etc.

Hi,

Keep in mind that they are not real 16V AC transformers, but DC supplies.
The DC value is 23V (unloaded).
They could shorten the lifetime of bulbs. No problems for pulse driven electromechanical accessories .

As I have two, one I cut the plug off & the other I will use with a socket as you suggest.
The two wires in the cable, one has dashes printed on it and the other has writing, which was the equivalent of red and which was brown, or does it not matter connection wise?

Cheers again for a very informative website.

Sean
