All:

I have noticed that after running my engine for a while I can smell a faint electrical odor. After looking closely I am sure the smell is coming from the engine portion of the locomotive. I am wondering if I should be worried about this? I have checked everything and everything is moving correctly and everything is lubricated properly and the engine itself runs fine. Is this smell normal and perhaps part of the normal break in period? My guess is the engine has been sitting for a couple years or so.

I would appreciate any feedback or thoughts.

Chris

It could be the smell that is known as Eau de Märklin.

The smell of my not so old BR 78 recently turned from "Eau de Märklin" to a dangerous odour (while it was running on the club layout).
At home I found that the power consumption was much too high (can be measured with CS1, CS2, and recent MS1).

I cleaned it and found that the brushes were over-oiled ex works, with oil and carbon dust messing up the collector.
I cleaned everything: power consumption was down to normal, smell was back to Eau de Märklin.

Some sparks (and a smell of ozone) are normal, but when the motor gets really hot and smells burnt then there is something wrong.
Regards
Tom

If the engine does have the "squealing brakes" sound, I think it works when the function button is off - that is, do not select it. The sound will then come when you stop the train abruptly.

To hear the squealing brakes sound, activate the operating sounds, do not activate the function "squealing brakes" (coz it actually is "squealing brakes off") - and then run the train fast and brake abruptly to a standstill.

Good news, based on Tom's feed back I took the motor cover off and found a bit of oil that had gotten on the brushes. I cleaned everything up and it is running cooler with no real smell.

Thanks,

Chris
