the BR 042 sounds like a very good idea

New boiler? New frame? We'll see ...

I think a 42 using the 03.10 boiler is very likely, as it enables marklin to provide a different model without having to invest in any new tooling. The tender already exists, the chassis exists, and the boiler exists. BigGrin Nice cheap to produce new loco, exactly what they need right now.ThumpUp

Unfortunately, it will be sold to us in Big $$$$ Bucks all the same, despite the recycling of parts.

And again, despite now the unknown quality of the motor....

With DCM and SDS models, at least you know exactly what you're getting. This 042 has a big question mark over its motor choice which will not be fully resolved until the first reviewer / volunteer "take the plunge".

37010, 37044, 37140 taught us that Marklin nowadays doesn't hesitate to put a cheap DC motor in exchange of SDS for the same amount of price as their previously released SDS version (substantial saving for Marklin = inferior model = substantial rip-off for customers).

Logic says with 042, you'll get at least a 37915 or 37450 drive quality... but we won't know for sure until the end product comes.

That's not quite true. Both the VT11.5 and VT08 were made of metal. Both the Fliegender Hamburger and the Senator were made of metal.

The locomotive of the Dutch ICL-set (M. 26561) will have a metal body, see this brochure on page 2: "Nederlandse Modellen". It was a new model for 2010, but they will deliver it this year (only for the Dutch Märklin Shops and Stores). I wonder if they'll come up with a metal bodied re-tooling of the Br151 electric? It seems to be the only one of the standard electrics they haven't updated yet.

A couple of possible re-releases this year might be the Br92, with a full digital decoder, and perhaps the E75, which we haven't seen for a few years.

I would love for Marklin to make a new tooling of the old SNCF 9200 with proper glazing. I could see it forming the basis for an all new "Le Capitole". Another insider special?

Sorry for all this speculation! I can't stand the suspense!

I found this page on a German dealer's site:
http://www.lennys-bahnsh...FFE4F690AE?dispatch=show
(the dealer shows pics, but I presume he found 'em on the Roco web site ...)

He writes about 37925: "Komplette Neukonstruktion, Sound" (completely new mould, as expected)
He writes about 37740: "Sound" => so maybe it's no new metal mould, but a re-run of the old plastic loco.

Two or three weeks until we know for sure (and I won't place orders before end of February).

This might as well be a re-run... I'm a bit skeptical about the prospect of it being a new model.

A BR151 like Ray suggested above will have more potential sales IMO.

Tom, I am not familiar with the terminology. What's the difference between decapod and mikado?

A decapod has the axle configuration 1'E (or 2-10-0), a mikado is 1'D1' (or 2-8-2).
In 1968, 041 was used for the coal-fired BR 41 locos, 042 for the oil-fired BR 41 locos. BR 42 was no longer in service in West Germany at that time and is a completely different locomotive.

Sebastian,
These are the names that some wheel arrangements receive. For instance a Mikado is a 2-8-2 and a Decapod a 2-10-0.

Is it correct, then, to recycle the boiler of last year's BR 03 for this new BR 042? How about the sand pipes? I hope they won't continue to do the same botch job they've always done on the previous releases of the BR 41.

Another thing that puzzles me, why would they take pains to release a BR 042, instead of a BR 41, or say, a (much needed retooling) on the BR 44?

Märklin don't cease to surprise me!

Yes, the new boiler of BR 03.10 (which is not a BR 03 BTW) is correct for BR 42. No more sand domes, so no sandpipes at the boiler.
So then Märklin will have a new frame for BR 41, so hopefully a new BR 41 with old boiler (old prototype boiler from a new Märklin mould) will also follow - with motor in the boiler, not in the engineer's cab.
They can also release BR 41 locos of era III with the new boiler.

Product positioning wise, I think it is a very smart move..

As Tom posted above - the 042 is the rebuild version of BR41, and is a model that M* hasn't build before.

So as far as the new model market goes - this new model already "replaces" the old BR41 in the DB Mikado segment. Those who weren't impressed by the old 37921 offering are finally given a brand new replacement in its place.

It's fairly safe to say now that the old tooling 37921 is the last of its kind. But at the same time, technically the old BR41 is still current as the 042 is not it's direct replacement(!)

Thus those who already bought the old BR41 - especially 37921 version - can also be enticed to buy the new one to add to their collection - as it is certainly different enough in detail and appearance.

IMO Marklin wouldn't rush off and introduce the old boiler BR41 in the near future. There is also consideration of resale value of the older BR41s in the same way that it worked against plastic bodied BR103s.

Tom,
But, unless I'm totally wrong, isn't it a sand dome with 3 associated sand pipes what you can see in this photograph of a BR 03.10?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:BR03_1010-2.jpg

Why do you say, then, that there was no sand dome on the 03.10 anymore?

On another note, one could expect that Märklin will soon be releasing a streamlined BR 03.10 using the frame and boiler of last year's BR 03.10.

The Insider 03.10 and the forthcoming 042 have the new boiler without sandpipes. Your picture shows the old boiler with sand domes and sand pipes.

They don't need a new frame for the streamlined 03.10 because you can't see the frame or the boiler anyway (and the streamlined 03.10 had the old boiler).
They need a new, more silent motor for the 03.10 - and they should stop the shell from vibrating - the centre screws of the current shell allow it to chime like a bell.
A guide mechanism between loco and tender would also be nice.

That picture shows the reko DDR version of the 03.

In other pictures you see sandpipes near the wheels. So the BR 03 had sand, but not in a dome on the boiler.

Sure they did have sand (but the picture doesn't show a BR 03, it's a BR 03.10).
The big sand boxes of 01 1001 (CBE 5) make it so special (compared to previous Märklin models).

Märklin used the old boiler of the BR 03 with three engraved sand pipes also for the BR 41 (where it should be 4 sand pipes).
This problem doesn't exist with DB locos with new boilers: no sand domes, no engraved sand pipes at the boiler, sand pipes only at the frame.

Here's a picture of a DB 03.10 with DRG boiler and sand dome/sand pipes:

That's not quite true. Both the VT11.5 and VT08 were made of metal. Both the Fliegender Hamburger and the Senator were made of metal.

The "Fliegender Hamburger" was not the Fliegender Hamburger (later DB class SVT 04.0), it was the Bauart Hamburg ((later) DB classes SVT 04.1 and SVT 04.5).
Many people rather bought the full-length plastic version from Kato than the shortened metal version from MäTrix.

Am i correct in spotting that the photograph comes straight out of the new items brochure, looking at the vertical page seperation line passing the loco?
If so,could we see the remainder of the brochure also?

I guess it comes straight from the Härtle web shop where you can see three detail images (somebody "glued" them together).
http://www.haertle.de/mo.../neuheiten+2011+spur+h0/

Otherwise this would be a picture from the centrefold (with 2 stitch lines). RollEyes
Haven't seen any centrefolds in Märklin new items brochures. Wink

The only thing that I have been able to gather from the German language forums is the mention of Re 420 (Re 4/4II). It might be a reappearance of the Re 4/4II in red or might be the first appearance of a Re 420 (not Re 421) in the Cargo livery. The Re 420 are Re 4/4II repainted in the Cargo colours with the normal Swiss handrail and pantographs that are used in Switzerland only.
The price is a little higher than previous similar SBB Start Sets, so I am a little curious what the set will offer as well.

Regards

Anyone know if they might make an all red version of the SBB Re 6/6 in 2011 ?
I've been dying to get one for years !
So far they made the Re 10/10 all green and the cargo version Re 6/6.
