Hi friends,

This is my first topic on this section.

3 months ago I purchased a HAG Re 4/4 II for a very cheap price (54€). This locomotive included the awesome "type 88" motor with ball bearings, however, there was an explanation for such a low price:

1-It had been used on a layout with overhead wires, and the previous owner had removed the pickup shoe (easy to fix-I adapted a Roco pickup shoe)

2-Worst of all, the roof had been "weathered" in a way that I did not like at all. The looking of this loco was not good.

So I decided to try to improve the roof. I had to "unweather" the roof (difficult) and repaint it.

This is how the loco looked when it got home:

Removed the housing, removed all the accessories (pantos, windshield, roof equipment) and tried to wipe off the roof as much as I could, or, at least, until the surface was flat and levelled enough:

Purchased spray primer & silver paint from Tamiya, and masked the body loco. For the front & rear ends, as they were quite irregular, I used play-doh (!), and even if I did not know at all if it would work, it did, actually.

I prepared a box to be used as a "painting cabinet":

Roof in primer, after two coats (the product is awesome):

After the primer got dry, the finish silver paint was applied:

And this is the final result, after tha paint got dry and the masks were removed:

Notice the job the play-doh has done on the front end. It's not a professional job (I should have peeled all the paint off), but the looking has improved, in my opinion.

Best regards.

Good job on a difficult task. Removing the old paint without damaging details would be tricky.

Has anyone tried a sandblaster like this one?

Hi Brakepad,
Nice job, and very well described. Did you use paint spray cans?

Very well done! Playdoh does work well. I've used it for masking camo on aircraft models before.

well now I must get one of these little grit blasters. there are several on ebay, but not with the paasche brand, but look the same, and a little less expensive.

Thanks for your comments guys.

Yes, both primer & silver paint were spray. I have no air brush.

And I have to say that Tamiya spray products are 1st class.

The playdoh trick has been really helpful. I recommend it to everybody.
