Hi

How do I construct a Helix?
The wood peaces underneeth the track - how long is each section - 4 sections per 360 degrees?

I have looked at Ron's great work http://www.sem-co.com/~rschaffr/trains/helix.html but cant see the details.

Could NE1 give me the materiale list used for building a helix?
(Maybe Ron could explain how he has build his? Smile )

Eisenhower:

We cut circles in plywood to the right diameter, then split them across the run of the track, expanded the circle into a helix, then joined the ends together. Each circle had eight "ears" (four inside and four outside) which we drilled holes in for the support. The support is threaded rod ("allthread") and nuts and washers. You can adjust the hight of any quadrant (and the tilt) by turning the nuts. Each nut was a double to lock it in place when we were satisfied.

Just an added tip - the easiest way to size the helix is to lay out the flat circle (or oval) of track, tape it down, and trace it with a good black marker. Then use a jigsaw or bandsaw to cut around it with enough room to spare to catch the inevitable derailments.

Great timing. I'm in the process of working out a helix on my layout right now, thanks for the links rugauger.
