I have dismantled the old 111 chassis with it's mechanical reversing unit and fitted the motor parts out of a 60901 set.

I have also added the decoder having knocked up a tin plastic bracket to hold it where the reversing unit was.

Only problem left? Lights....

The supplied bulbs (600150) ground through the chassis and I am not sure if the decoder likes this - I have always used the orange wire.

Is it safe to ground through the chassis or do I need to knock up a couple of fibre boards to hold 610080 bulbs, something that is not a problem but is more complex.

Any help appreciated, many thanks

I'd go for the 610080 bulbs with the orange wire to decoder ground instead of chassis ground. A bit more work, but worth it since otherwise you'll get the famous flickering lights that was a nuisance with the older 6090-set.

Grounding through the chassis does not harm the decoder, but as the Webmaster points out, it causes an annoying flicker.
