I have a problem that occurs occasionally and I hope that someone might be able to explain to me what is occuring. For some unknown (to me) reason my trains will stop running but the layout lights will ramain on. When I turn the dial on my transformer the lights get brighter (kind of like a rheostat control). I end up fixing it by disconnecting and reonnecting the feeder track sections. Can anyone tell me what is going on here?

Thanks.

My first thought is a bad ground connection, or possibly a minor short in the tracks, causing enough power to go through the short that the voltage of the lamps drop, but not enough to trigger the trafo protection. In both cases I guess the brightness goes down when increasing the dial? I also assume analog operation.

I support Lars' theories, but I think it may help if you describe more exactly how things are connected:
- M, C or K track
- AC or digital
- How are lamps connected (ground through track or by separate return) ?
- Are lamps fed with the yellow output of the same transformer, or from a separate one ?
- How bright are the lights for different speed dial settings ? Brighter or less bright with higher speed dial ?
- If you remove all locos from the track, do the lamps still light when the failure has occured ?

In my opinion, you could have a problem with the ground connections. When you turn the knob, if your ground connection is loose or disconnected, you are getting a series connection of lights and trains.
