Good Morning everybody!
I would like to propose the following challenge:
This is a picture from my first locomotive. I would love to start weathering this loco, on the other hand is an irreversible process and i need help with it.
So my idea is (if you guys consider it interesting)with contributions and tips from you all, start the weathering process, by follwing your instructions. I will keep you posted with photos from the process and we will see wahat's the final result.
Any volunteers?

Interesting idea!
My advice when it comes to weathering is not even related to paint or other technical issues. It's different. Before you start, search for pictures of the originals. Study those pictures carefully. Just to get an impression on where the prototype gets dirty, rusty, oily or worn. Every locomotive type has got its own spots where it accumulates dirt significantly. For instance Google images can be a good source to find those pictures.

In this particular case you might find some useful pictures here:
http://www.bahnbilder.de...and~Dampfloks~BR+86.html
http://www.dampf-ade.de/...6,1,1,1,Baureihe+86.html

Now you'll only need to hope there's a good picture of a dirty BR 86 around. wink

Then a somewhat more technical advice; search for the handrails on the cabin. Those are ommitted by Märklin on their startset models, probably as a cost reduction measure. It would look great to add them. I seem to recall some forummembers already did the same. Perhaps someone knows which article codes you'd need.
Finally, as you'll be painting your model anyway, it is probably worthwhile to paint the axle ends red, looks a lot better.

Good luck!

BR,

I would suggest finishing the "prototypical" paint job on the locomotive before beginning weathering. I posted awhile back on this very thing with my Br 86:

https://www.marklin-user...ult.aspx?g=posts&t=10265

I have done a bit more to it since then, but have not started the actual weathering process yet. I'll post an update on that thread, or just throw a current photo up here, either one.

Oh, and come back down to Earth with us, because "In space, no one can hear you scream!" biggrin

I'm just wondering what you are going to do for lettering when you are finished?

You're doing a very nice work with the Br86... what would you do about the lettering on this locomotive? I'm curious about the work... Keep us posted... I might be brave enough to do the same to mine when you're finished.

Hi guys!
Maybe you will be disapointed, but i bypassed the lettering on purpose. Many pictures from old locomotives, show them without any lettering. I could easely have taped the lettering and save it but that wasn't my goal.
Maybe i'm doing something that violates the "model railroader weathering code", but i don't mind, my main goal it's to have fun with this hobby instead of beeing tied to technicality's or fundamentalisms.

Hi there!
What kind of product should i use to weather the loco windows? They look very transparent for a old and rusty machine...

I'd just sprinkle some kind of dusty looking powder on them, then take a cotton swab and wipe it almost all off. This should leave a mostly clean window, with a ring of dust around the edge, which would make it look like a hastily-wiped window.

Hi Mike, Hi John! Thank You guys so much!
This was one of only two locomotives that I have made of plastic (hobby series). She was feeling miserable compared to her older sisters, the (Profi series). So I decided to give her something to make her feel and look more grown up...make-up!!
It is rewarding to read your words.

Benny and Foumaro, thank You both!Specialy arround here these kind of words are priceless.
I'm not that brave, i tried this in a plastic model i would never do it in one of mine metal locomotives.I'm considering the idea of trying this weathering experiments in wagons from the hobbie series...you know what? it's not that hard you only need a picture of a real one and some pigments and ink.

Hi FMS,

Congratulations on a job well done!

Are you going to leave the locomotive the way it is, or do you plan to add insignia and other symbols?

Cheers,

Hi Ranjit, how are You my friend?

I'm going to leave the Loco like it is. Rusty, no road numbers or symbols.
I must confess that I'm happy with the final result, I'm not Usta so for me this suits very well. What about You, thinking about weatherin experiments?
