We all know the benefits of the Power modul 5215.

http://www.viessmann-modell.com...&gr_nr=4&typ=dec

How may would you suggest? Their website tells me that 1 is sufficient for a regular layout'but whats regular?

I'm operating 14 Viessmann 5211 decoders and 4 Viesmann 5212 decoders.

Hello,

the max current that the module can withstand is 2 Ampère. 1 decoder is needing nearly 10mA. the switching device is depending what you use. take in account 1 device switching at a time.

Do you have to use these power modules? What is the benefit of using them? I have about 8 or so 5211 modules, which I have been happily using without a 5215 power module for several years.

From their site: http://www.viessmann-modell.com/pdf/5215.pdf

The power module 5215 generates filtered DC from the AC input which is supplied by a usual model railroad transformer. This kind of DC is the best for digital decoders with separate switching current supply (e.g. socket “E” from the decoders 5211 for the motorola system or the 5212 for the NMRA resp. the DCC system) to
switch turnouts and signals
.

In practise it makes the operating of switches and signls more smooth.

Hello guys

I have started to install solenoid "motors" (Marklin 74490) into the C-track turnouts on my layout. I now want to connect the decoders, i have 3 x K83s & 3 x Viesmann 5211 decoders.

The idea was to use an external 'accessory" transformer to supply power to all the turnouts, easy enough to do with the Viesmann 5211 as they have the "E" port for this. As i can use the 5215 and a suitable dedicated accessory transformer.

How do i connect the K83s to this setup and still use the power from the accessory transformer and NOT the central control unit? Is this possible or should i just get 3 more Viesmann 5211 units in place of the K83s?

Another question; since the 5215 power mudule can cope with a 2 Amp current load, is there a reason why it cannot be used to feed power to the turnouts & other 16V DC components as long as the 2 Amp rating is not exceded?

Hello Marius,

yes, you can modifiy the Märklin k83 to have external switch power. See here

http://jsteam.homepage.t....de/stromeinspeisung.pdf

The advantage of the 5215 is that it has a capacitor inside which gives the strong power wave to switch. If you connect a lot of other consuming devices, a part of the power will be lost. But nothing avoids you to do it.

Hi Stephan, thank you for the advise.

I will convert my K83s to external power. Have ordered the 5215 and since i saved money (by not having to replace the 3 x K83s) a 5201 transformer as well. biggrin No i can light up the whole town.

Will take your advise on the output of the 5215; by making a "T" connection on the power line between the transformer an the 5215, thus not affecting the output of the 5215 but still have access to the reserves of power from the 5201.
