Just taken delivery of my ebay find 6022, which still works perfectly after twenty-odd years. Why can't they make them like this any more?

One query, on the back of the unit below the heatsink there is a five pin socket. Does anyone know what this is for? I worked out what to connect to the yellow/red/brown terminals and know that the sockets on the sides are for 6035/6 and keyboard/memory units.

Matt:

This is the connection for a 6015/6017 booster.

Is the 6022 manual booket with the unit, Matt?

No - not a problem as I found the decoder addresses for the buttons on one site and have now figured out what all the sockets are for. It's a really simple bit of kit - the brown/yellow terminals go to the 16v AC output of a transformer and the red/brown terminals go to the track.

It was happily shuffling a couple of locos up and down on a quickly assembled test track within 5mins of opening the box, so I think all is well. Now waiting for a 74444 digital point control kit so I can test that side of it. I plan to upgrade four strategic points, probably those which will be hardest to reach.

Edit, data for anyone else who has one with no instructions:

The loco control buttons - 1 is address 10, 2 is 20, 3 is 30, 4 is 40

Edit, after further playing:

The point control buttons are 253, 254, 255 and 256, after a bit of testing button 4 turned out to be address 256 so I assume 1 is 253 and so on.

Yes it does work perfectly with the "built in" decoders for C track points, I've fitted one to my track pack double slip (which lacked a motor as it was from a pack, so used the combined motor and decoder kit) and it behaved perfectly on test. Now to convert another three strategic points.

the protocol for accessories has not changed over the years, so you should have no issues. You are correct. Button one is 253. If you ever get a 6023 (same as 6022, but with a computer interface), it starts with address 1 instead!

If I see a 6023 at a price I can afford (and a seller that will take Paypal) I may well buy one - can they do the same things as 6051 in terms of receiving feedback signals from contact tracks via a module? The idea of replacing my 6600 with a computer controlled shuttle line is very appealing!

Matt:

Yes, you can plug an S88 directly into the 6023.

Hi Matt,

Not only will the 6023 do the same thing as a 6051, it will do it much faster, although I'm not sure you get access to F1-F4.

Cheers.....

Mike.

F1-F4 won't really matter on a simple end to end line. That said, I am pretty sure they will work if a 6036 is plugged in. The instructions for my 49960 Messwagen say that you can either use a 6020 and 6036 or 6021 to switch between the functions, and these are simply 6020s with some extra buttons added.

To be precise, f1-f4 is available, but can't be sent in the new format. f1-f4 differ very much in old and new format, so as most deocders understand the new format, barely none exist that can use the 6020/22/23. However, there are a few out there: Tanzwagen, Gesellschaftwagen, measure car, old stationary crane... And home built decoders based on the original Motorola IC.

So it's worth buying the 6036 rather than 6035 - I can always replace my 6022 with a 6021 later on...
